“Authentic...ahem”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2013

I chose this because its in Time Outs top 50, so was dissapointed to find it only Average. They asked me for a review comment so I wrote 'An authentic experience', which they'll like, but you and I both know it means 'Staff conformed to stereotype, food French, decor OK, wine overpriced, overall average'. Oh and St Lazare is a very crowded area so figure out why youre going.

“Art Nouveau Landmark Brasserie across from Gare Saint-Lazare”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

What a gorgeous brasserie this is! Across the street from the Gare Saint-Lazare, in Paris' 9th arrondissement, this is one of the most beautiful places to have lunch or dinner.

The specialty is seafood. Fresh oysters, crab, lobster, and all kinds of shrimp and langoustines are exhibited just outside. Inside, the walls and ceiling are simply magnificent, the service is most gracious: think French waiters in bow-tie and apron.

The menu is eclectic. If you pick one of the "formules (prix fixe menus)," your meal will be very reasonable. This is a place to have seafood.

The wine list is reasonable. The deserts are fabulous: by all means try the marron (chestnut) ice cream!

“Pleasant in PAris”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

Discovered this as a walk in and were very happy with the experience. As we had limited French I was concerned, but our servers spoke excellent English and made us feel welcome. We had grilled trout and steak tartar from the Menu of the Day and both were very good. We followed with dessert and both were excellent although huge. All that washed down with a half bottle of Bordeaux. The decor is wonderful and the atmosphere is enhanced by ladies and gentlemen of indeterminable age dressed to the nines having their lunch. Its french through and through, and would go back again for the whole experience

“Worst steak ever”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013

I have never had a steak this bad. Every bite was pure gristle, could swallow and had to spit it out. Talked to the head waiter who said "this is a rib eye, you should have ordered the Filet". I had ordered the menu, and this was the only choice. Paint is pealing off ceiling and walls. Avoid

“Very pretty interior, excellent fish”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

According to my French companion, this was once upon a time (late 19th to early 20th century) one of Paris's best restaurants. But little by little the area around it decayed, and the restaurant went downhill too. Sometime in the 1980s, someone chipped away the layers of plaster and wallpaper and re-discovered the original Art Nouveau interior decor, which consists of an intricate tile mosaic, solid-wood carving, and period paintings on the walls.

The restaurant is now operated as an upscale fish-house. When you enter today, it looks just splendid, and I would gladly have eaten here just to enjoy the decor.

On top of that, our turbot (a kind of sole) was actually very good, too, served with hollandaise sauce and mashed potatoes, which doesn't sound quite right, but harmonized perfectly. Because the area is still not especially upscale, Mollard seems to charge less than the quality of the food would warrant.

We had a half-bottle of Riesling, and desserts, both okay but not exciting. Our bill came to 140 euro for 2.

Service was in general competent and friendly, and the female staff were quite attractive and pleasant, which never hurts. At the very end of our meal, our waiter got busy and, having given us the bill, didn't come back for over 10 minutes to process the card. But there were so many other things to like that, for the overall dining experience, I felt that Mollard did a good job.

It is located very near Gare St. Lazare (train station) and the metro stop of the same name, just 20 steps away from one of the metro exits.
