I'd read a recommendation for Ave Maria before our visit to Paris and was delighted to discover that it was only a few blocks from the apartment where we were staying. We visited on our last night in Paris at the end of a trip across many regions of France. Ave Maria's is not a typical French menu, to be sure, and that was part of what our party of five enjoyed after two weeks of French bistro fare. We enjoyed the funky decor and ambiance, too, and loved the menu artwork. We arrived a bit on the early side for Paris locals, which likely is why we were able to score a table; later, other guests shared the table with us and we enjoyed chatting with them. I agree with another reviewer that the staff is not friendly...but c'est la vie....we were there for the food.
Each of us ordered something different from the wildly diverse menu of curry-based and generally intensely-flavored dishes from Brazil, Africa and India. Each dish was accompanied by a fresh salad of veggies and fruit (like an array from the market that day). Once the food was set in front of us, all conversation ceased...that is, until we started snagging bites from each others' plates. We ordered a lovely rose wine to accompany our flavorful dishes, although the cocktails definitely tempted us. And we were so satisfied with our dinners that we did not order desserts. By the time we left Ave Maria, the place was hopping with what appeared to be mostly locals at tables both inside and out.
