We Brazilians as picky with caipirinhas, after all it's our national drink, so if you're longing for one in a very nice spot go to Ave Maria with no fear. Haven't eaten at all but from what I saw around it looked quite oke as well. Besides that, Oberkampf area is developing quite rapidly on the same mood as the Marais and it's very nice to feel around this mixture of tribes in a setting like that. Very good place for its purpose and proposition and it worth a stop if you're around.

Of all the places in Paris to hang out – the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, you name it – I really enjoyed a little bar/lounge called Ave Maria, that’s hidden just off Rue Oberkampf by the Bastille area.
I was in Paris with my wife in July, and we stumbled one night into this place that was a few blocks from our hotel. Ave Maria is a hybrid of a chic SoHo lounge and a Mexican cantina with a touch of Japanese accents. The owners – these two women who hardly smile, unless you order three drinks or more and comment on how cool their place is – tend bar and bus tables.
The lounge, two blocks from our hotel in the 11th district, is named in honor of the matriarchal goddesses and female religious figures throughout religions and popular couture (I’ll come back to this point).
At first, Ave Maria looks dumpy from the outside and a questionable crowd of young artists, punky Gen-Nexters and middle class Yankee tourists chain smoke by the front door at night. Plants adorn the windows, which are covered with non-graffiti markings.
Upon entering, a sensory overload takes hold of one’s mind. The lounge is so elegantly busy with stuff—there’s a splash of vibrant color contrasted by artifacts from 1950s Mexicali”s music scene and cheap Central American décor hang over the bar stools, which lean against a cantina made of aluminum siding. Piñatas in the dining area also hang above rustic picnic tables that conceal safe-to-walk-on broken tiles on the floor.
Aside from its Mexican vibe, Ave Maria is not a Mexican restaurant. The menu is high-end French crepes and pastries (I recommend the “Very Lovely” chocolate cake), with divine cocktails.
I’m not sure if the devil offered his recipes, but something had to be going on with the Mojitos, the Bellini-esque drinks and the Tequila Sunrises. Dale DeGroff would be proud of the consistencies achieved by the mixologists.
The amenities are very French as well, meaning the bathroom is unisex and reminiscent of an Upper East Side small hard rock venue that’s covered in black sharpie. And, immediately in front of the bathroom area, next to the cantina bar, is an altar.
That’s right, an altar.
On it sit about two-dozen tiny and not-so-tiny idols that included the Virgin of Guadalupe (of course), Buddha, Krishna, Athena, and for the more avant-garde crowd, Marge Simpson, E.T., and pictures of Julia Roberts (obviously) and La Gioconda. Worshipping was optional. – Eugene Mulero

We wanted to try Ave Maria due to all the good reviews, also from friends, but arriving just before the place opened, the two waiters were both extremely rude and it seemed as if they were bothered to see customers..?! We kindly asked if we could sit outside to wait 5 minutes until they were open (because it was impossible to find the sign with opening hours) and the female waiter said "NO"! A little shocked, I asked the male waiter WHEN we could come inside to eat, and he answered with a really snappy attitude "is it difficult to understand - NO FOOD BEFORE 8 O'CLOCK"??! So we left, and don't plan to ever return just to get insulted like that again... Too bad..

What a little gem, little being the operative word!
We arrived early so got a table easily, others were not so lucky. A great atmosphere, amazing food and drink at very reasonable prices.

Would definitely go back and would highly recommend it.
