Renting an apartment in Paris is the ONLY way to go! My experience with Vacation in Paris was beyond my expectations. They were responsive and helpful throughout the entire rental process. It was one of the few things that actually went very smoothly during our trip!
The apartment was spotless when we arrived and it was more spacious and modern than I expected. Our group included my family and a couple friends and we fit comfortably.
St. Germain des Pres is a great area to be in and close to various Metro stations. Rue de Buci, while a small street, is lively and full of cafes, shops, a supermarket, restaurants, bars -- everything you need only a stones throw away.

While spendy, this apartment is well worth the price. At this price point you can move up from the "student studio" to a relatively upscale apartment. The furniture is comfortable, the kitchen is very nice, and the main bath roomy. The layout provides for a spacious feeling. All in all it is a very nice place to spend a week or two in Paris.
There are two Monoprix (grocery stores) within short walks, the older but larger one at Rue Rennes (s of St Germain), and a new, smaller, but very nice one at Rue du Bac (n of St Germain) -- near the recommended Eric Kaiser Bakery at Rue du Bac and Verneuil.
For fans of the 6th, this is an excellent location. So close the the Luxenbourg Garderns, etc., etc.
The apartment runs from the street to the courtyard, which allows for good air flow. The street side is an active pedestrian shopping/tourististy street, but as the apartment is up 5 floors (you should be up for the climb) the sound is a bit muted. We were able to regulate the noise reasonably by controlling which windows were open.
The second bedroom is designed as a children's room with fun but limited ceiling lights (micro changing color "spots") and a trundle bed. The en suite second bath toilet is limited to liquids (no solids or paper).
The main bathroom which is fully functional, with a very nice shower with hand wand and deluge shower head.
The kitchen is particularily nice and roomy, with excellent appliances, cooking pots, plates, and the like.
We went for this apartment because we were booking fairly soon to our departure date and we have been staying in this general area (6th, north of St Germain) during our last few trips. While we are usually a bit more frugal, this was a very nice splurge.
