I am a French teacher who takes groups of 16 year old students from Australia to France regularly. Normally when in Paris we stay at the BVJ youth hostel near the Louvre. However, last time, this hostel was booked out during the period we required. I needed an alternative which was as cheap and convenient as a youth hostel. I found the Hotel des Olympiadesl on-line and discovered it was actually cheaper per person than the hostel.
The manager and his assistant were extremely helpful. They welcomed our group warmly and provided us with clean comfortable en-suite rooms. The hotel is old and faded but that is part of the Parisian charm. The hotel is right next to Simplon metro station so sightseeing was easy. There is a lovely patisserie next door where we obtained our breakfast each morning. We could also walk easliy to Montmartre and Sacre Coeur. As this is a working class area of Paris, the streets were busy. At times some of my students felt uneasy because of the suggestive comments they received in the street. However, this could happen in any street in Paris!
It's not the Ritz, but it's cheap, clean, comfortable, accessible and has a certain faded charm (even if the lift breaks down occasionally).
