Hotel Villa Mazarin

Always worth noting when a Paris hotel gives you a little extra space, and when it's as central as Villa Mazarin, it's a real bonus. Looked like a little room renovation needed, but still of excellent standard.free internet.great location, rooms quiet with good double glazing as there is action on the street..

We stayed at here for 6 nights mid February this year during the last leg of our Europe trip and it was a great experience. Here is a little summary of what we thought about the hotel:

What we liked:
1. The hotel – lovely, elegant and felt very peaceful and quiet;
2. Location – Perfect. Le Marais is full of life and old Paris charm. At the same time, a trendy gay neighbourhood. Its close proximity from Metro and Chalet-Les Halles RER station, Ile de la Cite and Ile Saint-Louis, Rive Gauche (the Left Bank) (all of which are walkable from the hotel) makes the location an excellent base for sightseeing in Paris. Plenty of shopping opportunities that are only minutes walk away – BHV Departmental Store being practically across the road, Rue des Franc-Bourgeous, Rue Vielle-Temple and Boulevard Beaumarchais (slightly further to the east towards the charming Place des Vosges) are brilliant for both high end and mid price range shopping; the hotel is surrounded by heaps of shops selling all kind of things.
Hotel de Ville Metro (Line 1 is the most useful for travellers) being 2 minutes walk towards the river which took us to Louvre, Tuillerie Garden, Champs-Elysee and Arc de-Triomphe within minutes. A major convenience.
We found brilliant range of cafes and restaurants in the immediate vicinity (we particularly enjoyed our dinner at L’Angle 20 and Le Mauvais Garcons). There is a well stocked pharmacy across the road which was very convenient. Le Pain Quotidien down the road is a wonderful breakfast joint.
2. Staffs – professional and helped us with our dinner reservations. There were three different guys manning the front desk during our stay, two of whom were particularly friendly and helpful.
3. Room - we had a duplex with a lovely balcony with a table and chairs overlooking the busy intersection between Rue des Archieves and Rue de la Varrerie which was great for people watching while having my morning coffee and a glass of red in the evening. Our room was very quiet, very spacious (lots of room to unpack and we did not need to put away the suitcases), comfy, well maintained, has comfortable king size bed and pillows. Deco was simple, very chic and elegant.
4. Bathroom – modern, very clean and spacious. The heated towel rack was particularly appreciated in winter.

A few negatives:
1. Shampoo and body lotion was not replaced during the second half of our stay even after I informed the front desk;
2. Wifi – stable but only good for browsing the internet (only browsing port was opened). SMTP port was blocked by the management and this made using work email on my laptop’s Outlook impossible causing major inconvenience (only web-based email could be used);
3. Heater was not working properly on our second day and was never fixed during the duration of our stay despite we having informed the front desk;
4. Only 2 capsules was provided each day for the Espresso machine and they were not replaced during the last couple of days of our stay. I would have expected the hotel to be more generous on this for the price we paid.
5. A little more light on the upper level (where the bed is) would have been excellent.

Overall verdict: The location is brilliant and the hotel itself is great, pretty reasonable in terms of value. This hotel has tremendous potential and would have been really excellent if it could pay a little more attention to certain details (as highlighted above).

Room Tip: Get a room with balcony ocerlooking the small streets, it adds to the enchanting Parisian atmosphere

Our room was very big and the bed very comfortable and clean!
The staff were very helpful and spoke english as well as giving us very good directions and looking after our suitcases for free after we'd checked out.
The hotel itself was close to the gay area of paris with lots of trendy bars and restaurants with an excellent nightlife even on a sunday. The noise level in our room was non-exsistant even with the room being close to the street. The location of the hotel is amazing just five minutes to Notre Dame and not far from the Louvre. We will be back! Thanks

The Villa Mazarin's strengths are location and cleanliness. Located in the Marias, many sights are within walking distance, along with shopping and great dining options. Our room was clean and modern. The front desk was helpful, but this is a boutique hotel and services were limited. Can't comment on breakfast as we did not partake. Would stay here again.

Slightly distressed feel to the place, reception was a bit hit and miss but overall attentive, helpful and no problems. The location was great near Notre Damme and the Marie de Paris (town hall). From here it is a nice walk along the river to the Louvre. Breakfast can be taken in a small courtyard half of which is the hotel and the other half some run down flats, charming though. Breakfast was served complete but was very good, fresh bread, good Jams etc.

Room Tip: facing the side street is better

To find this tucked away gem, look for the small red awning to the right of the corner restaurant. I stayed here for four days with my 16 year old granddaughter. We felt very safe and secure. We were acknowledged by the front desk as we came and went. The room we had was on the second floor. Nice size. Comfortable beds. No noise problems. Many restaurants close by. (There's an Asian fusion restaurant about two blocks away that we went to twice. Wish I had the name. Sorry.) There was breakfast available at the hotel but my granddaughter liked to stop at the bakery in the morning. There's a Starbucks about one block away. I'm not a fan of traveling to Europe to not take full advantage of experiences that I can't get at home, but after paying 5 Euros for a petite cup of coffee at a sidewalk restaurant, I overcame my resistance and opted to visit Starbucks for my morning wake up cup. Access to transportation was great. The Metro stop Hotel de Ville is a block away. The 69 bus runs a block away. The morning we traveled to Versailles, it was a 10 minute walk to St. Michel to catch the RER train. London was our next stop via the Eurostar. We decided to take a taxi to Gare du Nord. The taxi stand was only a block away. (There's a surcharge if you hotel calls a taxi for you.) The hotel is easy walking distance to Centre Pompidou, Ile St. Louis, Notre Dame. I would definitely stay here again.

The small street entry and a minimal reception area on arrival belie one of Le Marais most pleasant and welcoming boutique hotels! By Paris standards, the rooms are up-scale and overly spacious, exceptionally clean, nicely decorated and comfortable, with modern, large and well-equipped bathrooms. The bedding and linens border on being luxurious, the air conditioning is awesome (important during some of those warmer summer days!) and the hotel staff simply couldn't be more accommodating! Some minor shortcomings, sure: lack of room service (or indeed any on-site eatery, save a small though charming breakfast area in the basement) might be viewed as a slight inconvenience; the toiletries and/or soap may not ALWAYS be totally refreshed daily; and a lower floor room - despite the large, modern double-panned windows throughout - might experience a bit of early morning Paris street noise. But this is NOT the Bristol and this IS the historic Marais. Charming, affordable, eclectic restaurants are everywhere within easy walking distance, the Metro is a mere block away -- the location is superb! One of my "new" favorites!
