“Fantastic jewel of a hotel!”
Reviewed February 27, 2011

We whittled down our list to a couple of Rick Steves' choices, but the positive tripadvisor reviews put Hotel du Champ de Mars to the top position. What a winner! I had stayed in the rue Cler neighborhood years ago and it was a real pleasure to return to this lovely, cozy area, full of mom-n-pop fromageries, boulangeries, charcuteries, patisseries, and just a few steps from the L'Ecole Militaire metro stop. You also have your own full-service post office around the corner, and goodness knows, there are two ATMs on every block. We arrived from our transatlantic flight too early in the morning to check into our room, so the mgmt allowed us to hold our luggage (right there in the precious lobby,) while we started our city wandering. Upon our return several hours later, not only was the room ready but our bags had already been moved to it for us! We had a totally cozy and comfortable gem of a room on the ground floor with a private postage-stamp sized courtyard, it was perfect. Excellent wi fi reception, which was critical for uploading each day's photos at each day's end. Arguably, the best water pressure either of us had ever received in a hotel shower, that's for sure. CNN is the only English-language tv channel, but we only had it on in the background at night so that was a very minor minus, indeed. There is breakfast served in a downstairs dining room but for an extra 8EUR pp, so we passed and easily made our daily choices for much less at a few of "our" bakeries and cafes on our walks btwn the hotel and the metro stop around the corner, no problem. Next trip to Paris, I wouldn't hesitate at all to stay here again. The owners were very personable and helpful and took an interest in our every comfort and enjoyment, of both their inn and their city.

We booked into this hotel where we stayed twenty years ago when we thought it was wonderful. THen, it was May, the sun was shining, the red geraniums were in bloom, and the hotel across the street had French flags flying in front of every window. Now, of course, it is winter - but, that really doesn't count. Our room on this trip, however, was drastically overheated, and we couldn't seem to regulate the radiators. Opening the windows helped a little.

The room also seemed very small -though that's typical for Europe, and the bathroom had been newly renovated with lovely fixtures and kept very clean. There was lots of hot water. The towels were pretty small and well-worn, but clean. The lobby is very small, and that's okay, but there's no where to go to get out of one's room for a snack or a glass of wine. The price was extremely low for Paris, even in off-season. We paid 100 euros per night, plus 8 euros each for breakfast. The latter consisted of bread, jam, yogurt, a small juice, canned fruit cocktail, a wedge of Camembert, and coffee, tea, or chocolate. Not too bad.

Madame the owner, who worked at the desk, was very overworked and nervous. She mentioned to mehow long a shift she had worked the second day we were there. Although accomodating, she did not need to share her problems with guests. Our last morning, we had the misfortune of getting on the elevator with two substantial English gentlemen, and because it was overloaded, it fell about two feet at the bottom and jolted all of us pretty hard. We admit we shouldn't have gotten on and were fortunate not to have been badly hurt. We knew they were having problems with it. We had to ring the alarm to be released from the lift, and were given a very severe lecture by Madame for overloading the elevator in such a way. I was very sorry, but no one inquired as to our well-being or expressed any concern whatsoever except for the inconvenience we had caused by "breaking" the elevator. Yes, we were at fault as were our fellow passengers. The lecture was delivered in the lobby to the amusement of young workmen and other guests of the hotel. I don't think I will stay here again.

The owners, Madame and Monsieur, were frequently in the public areas, working the desk or talking to the staff in the breakfast room. They both appeared harried and distraught. Perhaps it is time to retire?

The hotel across the street has been recently renovated into a "design botique" hotel. I think I might check it out, although the price is a little higher.

I loved this hotel. When I return to Paris I will stay here again. The hotel is accurately priced and it is in a nice, quiet little street. It is a short walk from École Militaire metro station and has plenty of supermarkets in walking distance. The best one is Carrefour near the metro. There are markets on some evenings in nearby streets with excellent food and it is close to some great pâtisseries. The owners are gorgeous ! Very friendly and they have a cute, old cocker spaniel named Cannelle. The owners helped out with travel advice too ! A lap top with wi-fi can be borrowed for free as well, which is really handy for travellers like myself who do not want to lug one around. I miss it already. Stay there, you won't be disappointed !

When my usual hotel in the 7e, Hotel Thoumieux, put its prices up by a crazy amount, I had to look for an alternative. Hotel Champ du Mars was a great find: good prices, a lovely room with an efficient shower, and with very pleasant and polite staff. Spend the extra and have breakfast there - it's excellent and much cheaper than trying to find a bar / cafe locally. We will certainly go again.

My fiancee and I traveled to Paris for a quick Valentine's Day weekend together, and could not have been happier with our hotel choice. Just off bustling Rue Cler, the location was a huge selling point for us. Hotel du Champ de Mars is positioned right in between the Eiffel Tower and Les Invalides, and is less than a 10 minute walk to each. But, our favorite part about the location was that Rue Cler was right outside the front door. An extremely charming pedestrian street with open-air markets, restaurants, and shops - there's always something happening. We were a little unsure about finding a place to eat late on Saturday night (11pm), but there were still a number of options right around the corner, and we still felt safe walking around the area after 2am. It had a great neighborhood feel.
The room we stayed in (#2) was small, but very clean and well kept. We even had a little courtyard entry to the room, which made it quiet and private, as if we were staying in our own separate bungalow. We didn't see a single other person while we were there that did not work at the hotel. Definitely a huge bonus for a quaint and romantic weekend! The bed was comfortable, the bath/shower had plenty of hot water and pressure, and there was even a television in the top corner of the room with CNN in english.
The owners of the hotel were extremely nice, helpful, and unassuming. They have the front desk staffed 24 hrs/day due to the fact that when you leave the hotel you need to leave your room key with them. This turned out to be sort of an unexpected surprise for me, as you didn't have to worry about losing your key, and there was always someone available to help with anything you need. Apart from the owners, there were two other gentlemen who helped cover the night shift at the desk, and all spoke english pretty well. At the front desk, were able to buy museum passes, print Eiffel Tower tickets, as well as arrange an airport shuttle. There was a small miscommunication issue with the shuttle due to the fact that is was going between two of the desk attendants and we weren't completely sure they had it scheduled for pick-up, but it ended up working out in the end.

Highly recommend Hotel du Champ de Mars - amazing value, charming neighborhood feel, and adorable by design.

This is our second stay at the Hotel du Champs de Mars because we love it! The location is superior ~ a few steps away from rue Cler which is filled with marvelous little shops, eateries, etc. Some of Zagat's finest restaurants are also within a few walking blocks from the hotel ~ Christian Constant has several on rue Saint-Dominique; Le Florimond (located on av. de la Motte-Picquet) is even closer to the hotel.

Rooms are tiny (this is Paris after all), but beautifully decorated. Rooms also have either a closet or armoire to store luggage and clothing. Our room, #45, had an abbreviated view of the Eiffel Tower. We were also told that our bathroom was going to be renovated after we checked out on February 3. We thought the bathroom was in beautiful condition, so it is apparent that the owners take great pride in maintaining their facility.

FYI ~ this hotel does have an elevator. An important feature for many travelers.

Don't hesitate in making a decision to stay in this charming little Parisian hotel. :)

My daughter and I stayed at this wonderful little hotel for 3 nights. We truly enjoyed it. The staff was amazing and so was the breakfast. Our room was small, clean and cozy. The only down fall was no AC, but there was a fan and you could open the window. The location is fabulous, 10 min walk to the Eiffel tower, great cafe's and markets all around! Fabulous!
