“Location advantage”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2013

In my view, BHV has the advantage of being located in an area of Paris which is frequented by all tourists. Hotel de Ville and Notre Dame are walking distance away and it's hard to miss this large store on the way. It is not as sassy, grand and popular as Galaries Lafayette or Printemps but looks like the sort of place where locals shop.

French open was on during our stay and this is where we found the signature towels after looking everywhere. Also, my wife bought a faux leather jacket for a surprisingly affordable price. The men's section is in a separate building across the street and is equally well stocked. You may not plan it as a part of your Paris itinerary but if you happen to be in the neighborhood, BHV is worth a dekko.

“BHV - She ain't what she used to be...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2013

The old reliable BHV - Bazaar de Hotel de Ville, to be precise - has changed. Until its recent take-over by the Galeries Lafayette group, this store was a reliable, reasonably-priced gold-mine of goodies, for residents and tourists alike. Now, not so much...

After the "face-lift" is completed in 2013, BHV will concentrate on presenting the same up-scale merchandise that is offered in Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. The much-beloved basement - formerly a treasure trove of hardware and oddities - is also changing. Most of this information really impacts residents and property owners, but is still useful for those looking for "an authentic shopping experience", in a place they have been told they "must" visit. There is no word yet on the famous yearly sales, but it is likely they will continue, at least to some degree.

The new merchandise is luxury-oriented, mostly mid-to-upper pricing tier - nothing here is cheap. A good bit of it is affordable, though, and the management is concentrating on the tourist market. If you are new to Paris, want to visit a department store, and are intimidated by the idea of visiting the fancier shops, BHV is a good option. It won't leave you broke, the staff is friendlier than at the exclusive shops, and it's conveniently located. On the other hand, it is not a particularly lovely building - for that, you will definitely want to make a trip to Galeries Lafayette and Printemps.

“Mini Department Store”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2013

BHV is a small Department store where local Parisians shop. Good quality at good to expensive prices. Found good prices with 30-40% off some items May 15 -24. More classic style clothing not young or edgy. First two floors have service near designer/brand display. Upper floors have only one main cashier with only 2 or 3 serving. Allow time to queue and purchase. Tax refund on 5th floor is quick. That is 12% tax refund for total purchases over $175.

“Not my favourite place to shop”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

I was in the area, having visited the couture exhibition at the Hotel de Ville, and decided to re-visit BHV after a lapse of several years. I had read in Le Figaro that BHV had just up dated the cosmetic department and were trying to attract a new, younger customer. To me BHV had never been 'my store' as it seemed to focus more on DIY and household items, not my forte. However, skincare and perfumes were more my taste. As I entered I knew I had made a mistake, construction was still in progress and bare, industrial pipes did not mix well with the world of beauty! BHV will never be as elegant as Bon Marche, nor should it try to be, we need variety and choices when we shop. However, I did find it incongruous to find Sisley, a fine and costly range of skin care and make up amongst this dusty environment. A well informed, and chaming sales woman introduced me to a new product and I was impressed by her manner. However, this was not the right atmosphere for me to consider investing in an expensive and very tempting new serum, a pity as she was a convincing salesperson. Perhaps, once the renovation is complete things will improve, but for me BHV simply is not worth the journey to a seldom visited part of town.

“Not the tourist trap”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

Tourists crowd Galleries Lafayette and Printemps, but the grand magasin BHV is more of a real Parisian experience. I needed to find a 3-plug with switch unit for my hosts, and found their lower level made Home Depot look sick. The handbag department on the main floor had exactly what I was looking for.
It's right across from the Hotel de Ville, where the exhibits are free.
