Meringue and other pastries. The pastry lovers in my family rank them amongst the best they've ever had. Sometimes there's a queue out the door, but if you're pastry mad, then c'est pas grave!

We had actually tried to go to Eric Kayser down the street from this place for their wonderful financiers, but they were closed on Tuesday. As we were walking by, we saw them making some kind of meringue cookies through the window, and the kids wanted to try them. They are called merveilleux. They didn’t look very good to me. I thought the meringue would be too sweet, so we just got a small one for ourselves, and the kids got the regular size. We also bought a chocolate brioche still warm from the oven. We took them back to the hotel and devoured them with some tea. They were both delicious. There are several of these shops in the city and one in New York City.

I took a gourmet tour of Paris recently, we went to a couple markets, were told how to figure out what makes a good croissant by just looking at it, how to buy a proper baguette, etc. We stopped by Aux Merveilleux de Fred and OMG, it's the best thing I've ever eaten! I wish I had tried different flavors other than the chocolate, but since I'm a chocolate fiend, I was afraid to branch out. It's hard to describe how light and fluffy a merveilleux is. Luckily there was a store somewhat near my apartment in the Marias, which I visited every other day during my stay. I could not stay away. Believe the other reviewers, they are not exaggerating how delicious a merveilleux is. Try one, you'll love it!
