Owner description: The Museum of Jewish Art and History is housed in one of the most beautiful historic monuments in the Marais, the Hôtel de Saint-Aignan, built in the 17th century. The museum traces the evolution of the Jewish world via its artistic and cultural heritage, focussing on the history of the Jews in France since the Middle Ages and evoking the communities of Europe and North Africa. Its collection, one of the finest in the world, comprises religious objects, manuscripts, textiles and unique archive documents concerning the Dreyfus Affair. Special importance is given to the Jewish presence in the arts, featuring the painters of the School of Paris (Chagall, Kikoïne, Soutine...) and contemporary artists such Christian Boltanski and Sophie Calle. The museum runs programmes of workshops for children, families and adults, guided tours, lectures, live performances and films throughout the year.

“Fascinating! One of the best museums on the Jewish History!”
Reviewed October 15, 2011

On a tip from a friend, we decided to go to this museum in the Marais area of Paris. So glad we did. It was outstanding. We learned so much that we had never know and we thought we were very knowledgeable on this subject. Easy to navigate around. Easy neighborhood in which to find. Friendly people at the counter.

“Great Museum on the Jewish Diaspora”
Reviewed September 26, 2011

This museum gives a full understanding of the Jewish Diaspora in France and how this great city was helped to evolve by the presence of the Jewish people. The displays are unique and the building itself is well maintained and properly ventilated. A walk through this museum will take about 3 hours to experience all that it offers. Closed on Saturdays and Jewish Holidays, do take the time to visit this museum when in the Marais.

“Intimate and ultra-modern”
Reviewed September 2, 2011

There is a dignity and poignancy about this museum which is fitting for the endless persecutions suffered by the Jewish people throughout history, not merely during the Nazi period but certainly including it. The memorable 2011 exhibition here was the "Chagall and the Bible" show. This show included 105 engravings produced for his 1956 edition of the Bible, The rest of the show was made up of works where Chagall had tried to reconcile Judaism and Christianity.

The museum is a cultural and scholarly precinct where Jewish achievement is celebrated and documented, displayed and performed and even for somebody of non-Jewish background, it is rich and fascinating.

Paris is incredibly well-endowed with museums and cultural heritage and this truly wonderful museum and cultural centre, is well worth a visit.

Located in the Marais, it is the traditional home of Jewish culture and commerce in Paris and its history is also tied to the history of Paris. There are many interesting Jewish shops and restaurants in the vicinity and some of these are worth visiting and trying, Food is excellent and often extremely reasonable for Paris.

“Loved this Museum”
Reviewed August 28, 2011

Lovely Museum in the Marais section of Paris. Has recorded narration of all the exhibits in many languages. A must see for any Jewish family visiting Paris. Then go to Pitzmans Deli for a falafel. Enjoy!
