“Excellent hotel....ghetto location”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for three night over the weekend. The hotel itself is brilliant. Very modern, wifi, brand new/recently renovated rooms. However, it's location is in one of the (many) dodgy parts of Paris.
Although its only a 5 minute walk from the nearest metro stop, walking it at night is very dodgy. We actually got a taxi one night as there was some particularly rascal locking locals on the train with us.
Probably fine in the daytime, but the walk is still full of rubbish, building sites seems to be constantly being used as a toilet.
Another minor thing, the tv has 40-odd channels but the only English speaking one is sky news. Having said that, the room came with a good selection of films to watch in English.

If you are looking at staying here...I would spend the extra 40 or so euros and go closer to a nicer part of the city.

I just finished a review of the Suite Novotel of Issy les Moulineaux and I feel the need to compare with the second one that we visited with my family 4 days only after the first one.

First difference will be the parking: I have been obliged to pay by hours in a public parking shared with the nearby Etap Hotel. This obliges you to go every time you go out with your car to the reception of the hotel if you do not want to pay the full price. Not possible to pay the full three days parking when you arrive.

Second difference is the type of suites; In Issy les Moulineaux suites were comfortable and not with a bath room toilet made out of acrylic (everything even walls, floor and ceiling) similar to an hotel F1.

Size of the room is similar and beds are comfortable but the service in porte de la Chapelle is not at all at the same level. Example: I ask the Friday afternoon to have a laundry done. Reception call the service provider that said if the laundry was given to their driver the Saturday morning he will do the job and give back the items the Saturday evening. When I returned to the hotel the Saturday evening nobody has heard about the laundry and we discovered that the bag never left the hotel reception...I had to ask two time to the receptionist where was my laundry to know that it was still in their office.

Restaurant the Sunday morning was so crowded that we could not take our pre paid breakfast. It was 07:30 in the morning.

Room service was everyday knocking at our door around 11:00 am asking to clean the room even if we were there. What a difference with Issy les Moulineaux were nobody was disturbing us.

An average experience that does not concern the Suites concept but rather a management problem

First off - the hotel is located just over the Paris city border. In a really dodgy location.

As we were on foot for our stay, we got out of the metro station on the non tram station side and tried to cross to the hotel. No pedestrian walkways, no signs saying which way to go and trying to cross major intersection with fast cars, 2 young kids and 4 wheely suitcases is not a great idea. Especially when you add in the suspected drugged up young men agressively yelling at each other from the middle of said busy roads.

Turns out we should have crossed the road as we came out of the metro station, but you don't know that when you arrive. Using the "preferred" route is not much better. You go under major roads, where some of the young men sleep/shoot up in the shadows, walk past a recycling plant and another place of building work of some kind and you feel very jumpy at anybody you see nearby as its poorly lit. All in a 400m walk from the metro station.

Then you get to the hotel. The reception area is welcoming, clean and friendly with the staff. But don't be fooled. Take the lift to the 3rd floor and a strong smell of urine greets you as you step out of the elevator. Get inside your room and again, pleasant on the surface. Until you use the toilet and discover a cracked toilet seat which pinches as you get up. Or a shower which is designed to leak all over the bathroom floor. Or a room divider made of sliding rattan panels which does nothing to block light or sound from the 2 children trying to sleep on their single beds in the living area. Or a tea tray with paper cups.

Breakfast - don't waste your money. The only hot food is an egg you boil yourself. Not even a toaster. You select from a cold buffet of 2 cereals, breads and pastries and pots containing a range of puddings like toffee apple crumble cheesecake. Few slices of 1 type of cheese. And thats it.

They always say finish with a positive, The reception staff were friendly and spoke several european languages. The room had a few nice little touches - free internet on TV, 36 free access movies including up to date ones like Bourne Legacy, Madagascar 3 and Paranorman. Breakfast bars in the room for 2 people (in a room for 4 people) and 1 sachet of hot chocolate, 1 sachet of tea, 1 sachet of coffee. And 1 milk.

But I still have a sore on my thigh from the loo seat...

Room Tip: Avoid 3rd floor. Avoid a broken loo seat. Avoid the area. Avoid the hotel...

This is a very nice hotel in a not so nice location. We travelled out to the hotel by Metro as it was located near to Porte de la Chapelle station at the end of line 12. It was obvious this was not the best location as the passengers looked more dodgy the nearer we got to the end of the line. We arrived about 8 p.m. so it was dark when we arrived. You leave the Metro and can see the hotel from the street level outside. It is however not immediately obvious how to reach it. We went directly for it and ended up having to walk along a cycle path on a fast moving slip road. we had to dodge the traffic to cross the road. There was in fact an easier way. If you walk down the road on the left hand side of the multi-level road junctions you can cross to the hotel under the flyover when you reach it. The only fault I can find with the hotel is that is did not have anywhere to eat when we arrived but the reception happily ordered in pizza for us. The hotel is very nice once you get to it with large spotless rooms. The buffet breakfast is the usual continental type. If you had booked a hotel of this quality in the centre of Paris you would pay considerably more for it. The hotel will not win any prizes for the view as you ahve a multi-level road junction right outside but the sound proofing was very good and you could not hear anything. We were on the front of the hotel and could see Sacre Coaur on the hill outside. You could do far worse than stay here once you work it out the best way to the Metro it is a 10 minute walk. You can be anywhere in central Paris within 30 - 40 minutes.

The hotel has triple rooms. Double. Single and another pull out bed under the double. Rooms spotless. Has very secure parking underground. We had three motorcycles and were allowed to park in one bay. The bay cost 30euro for 2 nights. The area is multicultural. Walked to la chapelle both nights without any hassle. The shopkeepers were very friendly. Could not but feel a bit anxious though when walking about area. Very close to ring road. Good overall experience.
