Owner description: Located on a land-filled swamp, this revitalized neighborhood, once a center of high culture, fell into disrepair following the French Revolution, but has regained prominence.

Lots of history here. We had recently read the book Sarah's Key which took place in that part of Paris, so it took on special meaning. Tour with a guide was very helpful.

Even the Cathedral of St. Paul has been scrubbed clean of the dirt that used to make le Marais a down-on-the-heels neighborhood. This area is now busy with trendy people dashing to and fro, rather than the simple neighborhood folk who used to walk down the streets. Several significant places in the area -- Picasso Museum, Place des Vosges, Musee Carnavalet -- make le Marais worth a day of your stay in Paris.

We did a two hour walking tour of Le Marais. This really gives an insight into the history of Paris, from the original wall surrounding the city to the original wood buildings.
If you have the time, do a guided tour of this area. You won't be disappointed.

The Marais is a great neighborhood to stay in. I recently spent three days there and never tired of wandering around the streets. It is definately the place to be on Sunday as the shops there are open. The streets are crowded with tourists and Parisians alike. There are many sidewalk cafes and restaurants of all kinds in the area. It is very centrally located and is near several Metro stops. I will stay there again!
