“Great budget hotel in ideal location”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

We stayed here for one night in early September and were very impressed. Rooms and public area are clean and comfortable, staff are friendly and helpful, and breakfast was good. A typical French hotel, just one metro station from Paris Gare de Nord, making it an ideal base to explore all the delights of the French capital. Reasonably priced. We will definitely stay here again.

I picked this place due to the close proximity to Gare Du Nord train station & the fact that we were arriving quite late.
The room was small...no problem.
The room was not clean...still no problem.
Money going missing from the room...big problem!
I left a small amount of cash (made up of English pounds, Czech korunas & Austrialian dollars) in my suitcase when we went out for the day sightseeing. When I got back & was packing my suitcase because we were leaving the next day i noticed my money belt was missing. I complained to the front desk but what could they do? All I can say is thank goodness they didnt take my passport & at the end of the day it was my silly fault for leaving it there in the first place.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Altona in early August 2013 for five days.

The location near the Gare de Nord rail station was the main reason we chose this hotel.

When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the reception staff and taken to our rooms.

Unfortunately as we arrived they were suffering a power outage so the lift wasn't available and we had to walk up four flights of stairs with a torch we brought along (no emergency lights working) to get to our room.

The rooms were quite small and definitely in need of refurbishment. Some wall fittings were held up by one half of the required screws and the bathroom door wouldn't stay shut unless you held it closed and locked it. The carpet was poorly fitted and the spare pillows were dirty and had not been cleaned in some time.

The room had double glazed windows which was a bonus although it didn't exactly drown out the loud conversations from the drunks and loiterers who camped out every night on the street below the hotel (near the wine shop; grocery store and moped parking bay).

Only one full sized towel was found in our room on arrival and even though we asked for a second towel it took over a day for it to arrive. The hotel also advertised that it had a safe deposit box available but when asking staff and trying to secure our passports, they advised that neither the rooms nor hotel had any safekeeping facility available.

Breakfast was available at a modest price in the basement rooms but we found that with no ventilation' cooling or otherwise the cramped dining area was quite stuffy. The food provision was basic and suffice to get one started for the day.

Free WiFi is available in the rooms.

Several grocery stores are available outside the hotel so you can top up your supplies.

Subway stations Barbès - Rochechouart and Poissonnière are within a few minutes walk of the hotel.

Regardless of the outdated furnishings and other issues we had, we actually enjoyed our stay and would consider staying there again if location and price was the overriding requirement.

Room Tip: Definitely choose a top floor and a room away from the main road!! Jump on one if the open top bus...

Travelled with two kids and a couple. Rooms were clean on arrival but towels appeared not to be fresh. Hotel staff were helpful and spoke good English and Spanish. Accomodation and breakfast were basic but adequate and good value for money. Location wise, hotel was conveniently beside a metro station and Gare de Nord so easy for getting around. Would not walk on my own in that area at night.

Given the low cost this is a good option. Ok not the most plush of hotels but does the job as a place to sleep and get out and about from. Internet worked fine. No complaints myself but might not suit someone on a romantic honeymoon.

Positives: Rooms are big, fast wifi, OK breakfast. Close to restaurants, Gare de Nord and other metro stations.

Negatives: We booked a room with a double bed only to be given a room with twin beds. No air-conditioner (Temperatures were around 30-35 degrees, go figure). The bathroom was dirty and it was never cleaned. There was a lot of dust. The shower was very very small and water could easily fill up, for some reasons it seems blocked and they didn't fix that. Water was coming off one side of a shower head it was just too old. The worst thing is they have bed bugs. We are still recovering from the bites we got. At first we thought it was mosquitoes until we realised that the biting is not random but on specific parts of the body. The elevator makes very strange noises.

Room Tip: Just book a room with a shared bathroom to avoid paying extra for a useless private shower. Avoid a...
