Hotel Cluny Sorbonne
Ranked #907 of 1,802 Hotels in Paris
Reviewed October 27, 2012

If you want a cheap room that provides a comfortable bed to sleep in and good location in the Latin Quarter, this is the place to stay. If you want glamor, spend more Euros and stay elsewhere.
The best thing going for this hotel are the people who handle the front desk. They truly went above and beyond the expected to help us deal with some surprise problems we encountered. They are knowledgeable, friendly, willing to speak French and great speaking English and I expect some other languages also, and concerned for each person staying at the hotel.
Location is great and price is hard to beat, in Paris, for any kind of room.
However, don't expect a lot in the room. It was cramped. Room was clean, BUT it was the second room we were given. The first room was extremely moldy and we could not stay in the room at all.
Our fifth floor room faced the courtyard and it was quiet throughout the night, but this was late September and we kept the windows shut trying to stay warm. The elevator is tiny--hard to get two thin adults and two small suitcases in at the same time. There is WiFi, but you need to be in the lobby for it to work. While we were there, no one seemed to be able to connect from any room. Traveling alone and trying to save money, I might stay there again. Traveling as a couple, my wife would kill me if I even suggested it.

It's not fancy, but Hotel Cluny Sorbonne could not be in a better location for exploring the city on foot. It's 5 minutes from the Jardin du Luxembourg, 10 minutes from Ile de la Cite, 15 minutes from Saint-Germain, and 20 minutes from the Marais. The rooms are a bit spare and--as is typical of Paris--tiny, but in a city full of expensive luxury hotels and bare-bones hostels, Hotel Cluny Sorbonne hits the sweet spot of providing comfortable, safe, and miraculously affordable accommodations. Sound does seem to bounce off every wall in this hotel, so you will definitely hear the comings and goings of your neighbors, but this can easily be remedied with a decent pair of earplugs. Definitely consider booking a room here if you're looking for a great value in Paris!

We stayed here for 8 nights. It is a very convenient location within walking distance of many of the sites. The rates are extremely reasonable. The rooms are small but clean. The bathrooms are small but clean. Our room was on the 1st floor so we could use the stairs. There was a small elevator available. We had a room on the courtyard and it was quiet. We could hear people talking or opening doors but for the most part it did not bother us. The staff was extremely nice and helpful and spoke very good english. This hotel does not have air conditioning. I think it would have been really stuffy and uncomfortable in warmer weather. The staff arranged a shuttle for us to go back to CDG airport--it was on time. The only reason I gave it a 4 stars was because the rooms need a bit of updating with paint and new furnishings. I would stay here again.

We stayed in a double room for 4 nights at 101 euros per night. Our room was on the courtyard so it was very quiet. The hotel walls are thin so occasionally we heard our neighbors talking or watching TV. I'm a light sleeper so I wore earplugs and heard nothing at night. The neighborhood is great - next to the Sorbonne so there are lots of students and young people, and the hotel is right around the corner from Boulevard St.-Michel which has lots of shops, restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores, etc. The nearest Metro stop, St.-Michel, is a 5- or 10-minute walk down Blvd. St.-Michel. We arrived in Paris from the U.S. at 7:00am and got to the hotel at 9:30am. They were able to get us into our room very early, at 10:30am, so they were very helpful in accommodating us. The room was small but clean.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room, request one on the courtyard.

Recently was here for two nights and had a fine stay. Here is the breakdown.

Pluses:
* Location! A few blocks from:
- RER B (perfect for getting to CDG) and metro Cluny-Sorbonne (on the 10) and Odeon (on the 4).
- Jardin du Luxembourg (great for a jog or stroll), Ile de la Cite, and a short walk from the Marais
- Shopping in St-Germain-des-Pres
* Wi-fi throughout the hotel
* Small elevator so you don't have to carry your suitcase up 6 flights of stairs
* Piping hot water
* Very friendly and helpful bilingual staff

Minuses:
* Tiny rooms as expected on a budget in Paris (think a double bed with just enough space around it for a couple of suitcases) and a tiny bathroom. There is a flat screen TV though we never turned it on.
* Walls could stand to be repainted and carpet could be redone but it was not dirty
* Rather thin walls - the hotel was quite empty so this did not bother us much but we could hear doors opening and closing occasionally.

Overall, great value (109E per night) for a fabulous location!

Hi! We stayed in this hotel from 13 to 20 September 2012 and were very pleased. First, and most importantly, the hotel has a great location - it's in the heart of Paris, near the Sorbonne. In most cases we did not even use the subway, because the hotel is within walking distance to the main attractions - Luxembourg Garden, Notre Dame, Pantheon, Louvre, etc. Second, there is very friendly and kind staff, who are always happy to help us advice. Well, in the end, the hotel is very comfortable numbers all work properly, there was always hot water, cleaning service happens every day. I'd love to come here again and recommend this hotel to everyone :)
