“Very clean and spacy party of four had large room 2 bathrooms”
Reviewed August 25, 2009

I stayed at Hotel Americain with 3 teenage children for 2 nights, the bedroom we stayed in sleeps 4, very large room, clean, 1 bathroom+toilet, and 1 shower room+toilet, 1 double bed 2 single beds, on the inside of building overlooking courtyard, pretty coutyard with flowers. The breakfast was a croissant glass of fresh orange, tea, coffee or hot chocolate i chose that was creamy yum, a roll with butter and jam, so enough to start the day. The Lady at reception was lovely she worked day shift and was very helpfull with directions. Hotel is on the doorstep to 2 metro stations, Republic and Temple which took 2 minutes to walk to, we walked to the hotel from Gare Du Nord took 20 mins as was following map and the sun was blasing, very hot. We bought an AA Paris Guide with fold out map from WHSmith, with all the road names and attractions on it, was more than helpfull to get around with and worth buying one, as not many french spoke english so did not need to ask for help, except in subway, we did find it difficult at first knowing which signs to follow, but my son soon picked it up. There is a deli next door that serves snacks in containers, we asked for a pasta salad with feta and tomatoes and lettuce, it was served with a sauce and a lovely roll which cost 5 euros. pizza slices and other lovely things. on the Republic square there is a kebab shop, which serves everything at a reasonable price, and opposite the hotel is a corner shop which is very cheep. There is a water fountain outside too, which the locals use for drinking water, you can see them filling containers. It took us 20 mins to walk to Notre-Dame, well worth seeing, and 30 mins to walk to the Louvre, amasing place and well worth cooling down in the numerous fountains/pools. All in all I would give the hotel 10/10 as i have no complaints, we had a happy and comfortable stay, towels changed daily and beds made too...

When we arrived at the hotel I was hopeful the pictures online hadn't done it justice and that it was going to be much nicer than I'd thought, because the lobby seemed so nice. We went to the room to discover outdated wall colors and bedspreads with little room to unpack. That being said, you're not going to find anything better in Paris for this price and location. The hot water WAS never-ending (my first shower had to have lasted at least min. 20 mins), there's an elevator (not always found in Paris hotels), and we could see the Eiffel Tower from our window. It was also clean and the front desk staff was friendly. I loved the breakfast room, and they served hot chocolate in addition to coffee.

Selected this property because we couldn't find availability at a B&B. Existing reviews very accurate -- rooms are small, clean, reasonably comfortable, simply furnished, with VERY limited storage space, ample hot water and a handheld shower fixture. Location is great -- we had a conference in the Marais, and it was an easy ten-minute walk back and forth. Only complaint was on the free wi-fi, which is why we booked the property -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, and the staff had no clue why/why not. Frustrating. Breakfast in the basement was fine -- and the arched stone ceilings quite atmospheric. All in all, a good value for a pricy city.

My teenage daughter and I stayed at Hotel Americain for 4 nights mid July. The location was great, as it was very easy to walk to lots of places and if you didn't want to do that, the metro was minutes away with good connections. We even got a first hand view out of the window of the Bastille Day fly past! My french friend exclaimed how small the rooms were, but it was pointed out to her that she'd never had to stay in a Parisian hotel and that that was the norm! The rooms were very clean and tidy, bath towels, soap etc. changed daily. We had a twin, but there was no space between the beds! If you were staying for more than a few days you might struggle to store your clothes as only a single wardrobe is provided along with a dressing table. There was always plenty of hot water, although no holder for the shower. A hair dryer is provided in the bathroom, but would say take your own if you have room in your luggage. Outside there are lots of bakeries around for breakfast (one right next to the hotel) if you don't want to have the one provided as an extra in the hotel ( consisted of croissant, roll, jam, orange juice and tea or coffee)
Receptionists all spoke English and were helpful. We were able to leave our luggage on departure day, but it was left out near the reception. Saying that the staff all seemed very well aware of who was staying in the hotel. Keys had to be left at reception but again they seemed to know who was in which rooms and often gave them to us without being told our room number. Just by the hotel there seemed to be a temporary hostel (for workers without permits I think), to start with we were rather concerned about noise when we saw this, but our fears were totally unfounded as whilst they chatted outside in the evening they weren't out there into the early hours. Our room was at the front of the hotel so you probably wouldn't even notice it if you had one at the back. We would happily stay in the room we had again although it has no air con so not sure what it would be like if it was really hot although we managed mid July.

Stayed here for 4 nights in December 2007. The hotel is clean, with attractive common areas and is well-maintained. As said before, some rooms are pretty small - we had two single rooms, mine on the second floor was pretty tiny, but my friend's on the 6th was much more spacious, so it may be worth asking when you book. But apart from size, the rooms are perfectly clean and functional, and the only thing wrong with the the bathroom is that INFURIATING habit French hoteliers have of not providing a bracket for the shower fitting, making you hold the shower attachment in your hand - presumably to make sure you don't spend too long in the shower? It's so annoying!
The location of this hotel was absolutely perfect for us - within 5 minutes of the trendy Canal St Martin area, which we had specifically come to to explore this time. Also only 10 mins from the Marais.
The Metro station, Republique, is on loads of lines, so is a very handy station to have so near. There is a super cafe/brasserie (open weekdays) next door to the hotel for your morning caf'e crême and tartine!
My only complaint about this hotel would be the hotel staff - they all looked so sad and miserable! None of them were impolite to us, or anyone else that we saw, but it was just a bit dperessing that all the people at reception (and there did seem to be lots of personnel changes in the 4 days), looked so fed up with the world. But this is a small complaint - this is one of the much better two-star hotels I've stayed at in Paris - very good stay for the price.

This is a lovely little hotel near the Republique metro station. The room is tiny but when in Paris you don't really stay in the room. What mattered to me was that it was clean, quiet, and we were able to walk by foot everywhere. We walked to the Louvre and back and even to the Eifel. But you don't have to - the metro is 5 mins away. Breakfast is not included but there are many bakeries nearby (one just beside the hotel) yumm. The receptionists speak English and are friendly.

Group of 3 staying in 1 single and 1 twin room for 7 nights. We all enjoyed a delightful stay at the Americain - the hotel whilst undoubtedly quite basic nevertheless exceeded our expectations. Rooms and en-suite were clean and modern with pleasant views from balcony windows. Breakfast was simple but nice; dining area and reception were particularly congenial. The front-of-house staff maintained a good standard, and provided 24 hr reception. The particular street location was quiet and cosy, but with the more vibrant area of Republique and the (gay) nightlife of the Marais relatively close at hand. The rooms were pretty small, but adequate. The only minor gripe - as a previous reviewer mentioned - is the showers inconveniently positioned at waist level. Also, the twin would have benefited from stronger lighting. We would all definitely return there again, and would recommend to anyone who doesn't require luxury accomodation but wants a basic albeit above average room.
