“Awesome Location”

Stayed here with my sisters for 3 nights and absolutely loved it. The location is great, 5minute walk to metro station and 8 minute walk to the Notre Dame. Great budget hotel for the price - it isn't fancy, but is clean and our room had a private toilet/sink. There was shower that the floor shared, that was kept quite clean. However, it does have 5 flors and no elevator. Two of the front desk people spoke English, the rest French only, but they were all friendly and helpful. We especially appreciated the walking maps they gave us and used them the entire time we were in Paris.

I stayed at the Marignan with my wife and two children for a total of 12 nights in July and August.

The hotel location is unbeatable, and was within walking distance of roughly half the sites that we wanted to see.

The hotel manager (Paul) and his daughter (Lili) were pleasant and very helpful. On the other hand, one member of the staff (a woman with dark, curly hair) was aggressive and unpleasant; she handles most of the e-mail communications. Fortunately, she was only rarely on duty.

I have only one major complaint with this hotel, and this concerns fire safety: Locks on doors of rooms cannot be opened from the inside without a key. To avoid being trapped in your room, it is advisable to leave your key in the lock. Also, I did not see a single fire extinguisher in the hotel.

I also have one minor complaint: The breakfast was exactly the same from morning to morning. After a few days, I began to tire of and finally to detest the single type of soft cheese that was served; I would have loved to have almost any other type of cheese (especially some type of hard cheese).

I stayed here in Sept '05 with friends. We're students, so we don't mind somewhere a little rough around the edges- to a point.

Location was a big plus. It's situated on a quiet street -rue de Sommerard- in the middle of the Quartier Latin, so it's close to a few metro stops and within walking distance of plenty of sights.

At the last minute, one of our group couldn't make it. We explained this to the staff when we arrived, but it meant that they moved us to three different rooms during the course of our 5-day stay, to accomodate other guests. The hotel didn't have a lift, just a spiral staircase, so we had to lug our bags up and down over and over, which was a pain. NOT PRACTICAL FOR PEOPLE WHO USE WHEELCHAIRS OR BUGGIES/STROLLERS, OR NEED ASSISTANCE WHEN WALKING.

The rooms, though clean enough, were quite small. This is typical for most budget hotels in Paris, and was cramped for four people. There were cracks in the walls and ceilings, and the fold-out bed isn't ideal if you have back problems.

The staff were friendly enough, but we speak French, so that helped. However, when we asked for some financial compensation because they moved us so much, we encountered a bit of difficulty. We persisted, though, and got some money back.

I'd reccommend this hotel for people on a budget, who want to be close to a lot of Paris' main attractions. It's a no-frills place to rest your head at the end of the day- not for those expecting something very fancy. Personally, I wouldn't go back, mainly because of the room-changing situation. There are plenty of other small hotels in Paris- it's worth taking the time to see what else is on offer.

On that note though, I think the Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter) is the best place to stay in Paris- there's so much to see, both there and close by; there's plenty of affordable places to eat and drink, and it's an ideal spot to wander around for the day.

There's a little brasserie (typical French bar) that I love on rue Victor-Cousin called le Duc (the Duke) that does excellent kir (fruit liqueur). It's an artsy-bohemian style place frequented by students from the nearby university, La Sorbonne.
