Actually, I didn't stayed there, 'cause i left everything for the last minute and couldn't find double rooms avaliable. Still, the hotel kindly offered instead a lovely studio at Rue du Cardinal Lemoine for rent, all equipped (cable TV, bathroom, kitchen w/sink, cooktop and refrigerator, etc.). I spent a great time there and I only have compliments to the staff, who was very attentive and patient (thanx, Ivona!).

Me and my friend stayed in Hotel Marignan in January and we were thrilled with our choice! Not only was the location fantastic (a close walk to sights such as Notre Dame Cathedral and a huge range of restaurants and shops), the hotel in itself was great. There was a small mixup with our room upon arrival but the staff handled it well - we were bumped up to a larger room (we booked a room with two singles and shared bathroom and shower; we got a room with a single and a double bed, and included bathroom and toilet) at no extra cost!

The staff were really friendly and helpful - if you can't manage to find how to get to a site even after reading all the information they have to offer on the walls, it was no trouble asking them.

The room was a great size and cleaned every day - although we still had to share the shower with another room, I never once in my entire time actually had to wait to be able to use it and it was a large shower with hot water and very clean.

There are also facilities that you can use free of charge such as the laundry and kitchen. The free breakfast of baguette, fruit and choice of hot drinks and orange juice in the breakfast was delicious and definitely an added perk.

Me and my friend chose Hotel Marignan as we were on a budget, but even if this weren't the case I'd be more than happy to stay there again!

  • Liked — The staff, the hotel itself and location
  • Disliked — No stairs - but with all the eating in Paris its not too bad to have to walk so many flights!

This amazingly economical, well located hotel has free laundry facilities, a kitchen, and a couple of guest refrigerators. The facilities are very basic (don't expect carpet) but clean, and more than adequate for the price. The overall atmosphere fosters self-reliance (there are notes everywhere on how to do anything) but when the staff wasn't in a crunch (such as rush hour at the desk or serving breakfast) they were friendly, helpful, engaging, English speaking, and occasionally hilarious, making for great memories. It feels a little like a cross between a hotel and a hostel, which allows more interaction w/ fellow travelers, but only if you're so inclined. Marignan is family-friendly. Expect to share the dining room with a WIDE range of guests. Stuff happens (did I say "no frills?"), so you have to be flexible but that's true anywhere. Its just a few blocks from Notre Dame but on a quiet street, so you can actually sleep w/ the windows open. We (two adults and a teenager) will stay there again next time we're in Paris.

  • Liked — Great location and price. The staff was human (not distant.)
  • Disliked — No dislikes, but the facility, however charming, is all about function. No pretense.

We have stayed at Hotel Marignan twice in the last 4 years. We would not consider staying elsewhere, it is in the perfect location, the staff are friendly and will help in any way possible. The breakfast is great, the rooms comfortable but no airconditioning but if you ask for a fan one will be provided. Every person who stays always comes back and has great reviews, we even met a person who stayed 50years ago and keeps comming back and she also works for the travel industry. We would certainly go back should we ever visit Paris again.

We learned of the Hotel Marignan from a dear friend who has stayed there many times over the years. His enthusiasm made us confident that we were making a good choice, but of course we wondered what tradeoffs we'd face when choosing an inexpensive hotel in the center of Paris. It turns out that the tradeoffs were good ones.

We did have three flights of winding stairs to get to our rooms, and we shared our bathroom and shower with others on the floor. On the other hand, we also heard the laughter of children on the stairs, because families can afford to stay there. We huffed and puffed less at the end of our trip, because we were getting some healthy exercise.

There were a lot of things we liked. We didn't have a fancy breakfast, but our breakfast was satisfying and delicious. French bread, butter, jam, cheese, coffee and milk: we looked forward to them every morning. We really appreciated having a washer and dryer to use rather than drag our laundry down the street or wash clothes in the sink. The restaurant reviews posted downstairs helped us find several good meals.

Our room looked out on the quiet street, with a pretty chestnut tree newly leafed out. Restaurants, cash machines, small groceries, and an open-air market were all just a couple of blocks away. Walk a little further, and we were at the Seine. The location is perfect for exploring any part of Paris. Maybe it was the April weather, but we found gardens and flowers everywhere we walked.

The best part of Hotel Marignan is the staff. We are eagerly looking forward to our next trip to Paris so that we can see Paul again and visit with all the staff.

We were at the hotel for two weeks. We had plenty of time to find the weaknesses. The only one I can think of is that my husband started to see patterns in the bathroom linoleum floor. As soon as he mapped them out, I started to see them, too.

We did not expect luxury, because we weren't paying for luxury. We expected a clean, quiet hotel, and we hoped for a hotel with character and friendly people. In all these areas Hotel Marignan exceeded all expectations, and the hotel bill was the only bill I received the whole time I was in Paris that did not shock and upset me.

Happy traveling to all of you, and I hope this review is helpful for you.

I contacted the Hôtel Marignan through their website (http://www.hotel-marignan.com/) and made a reservation for three nights over e-mail--they have a three-night minimum.

Only later did I realize that, duh!, my boyfriend and I wouldn’t be needing a room for the first night of our vacation, since ours was an overnight flight. I sent them a last-minute e-mail and hoped for the best, hoping they wouldn’t hold my stupid mistake against me.

We arrived at the hotel at 9 a.m. To my pleasant surprise, we were charged a slightly reduced rate for the missed night and were immediately invited to get our stuff to our room and come down for breakfast, which was in full swing. Each of us was offered a half-baguette; a single serving of butter, soft cheese, hazelnut spread, and jam; a tiny cup of canned fruit cocktail; a little cup of OJ; and either coffee, tea, or hot chocolate--an abundant continental breakfast!

We stayed in two different rooms: 36 and 15. Imagine a lake cabin was plopped down in the middle of Paris--this is sort of the feel of room 36. Unfinished, mismatched furniture, but very cozy and clean. The room accommodates four people and has its own toilet room and sink. We were only two, and we paid the price of a double since we would have to change for the following night--60 euros (cash only). One caveat: the climb to the sixth floor is not for the weak, but we thought of it as training for climbing up the Eiffel Tower and Montmartre.

Room 15, on the third floor, is a little bit more charming, but only has a sink by way of amenities. No matter: although we shared a toilet with another room on the floor, we never fought for toilet time. In both cases, there was a common shower on the floor.

Overall, the Marignan has a very cozy, family feel. A school across the street provides a cheerful soundtrack on weekdays--we could hear the children during their afternoon recess. The common walls are covered with posters describing some Paris sights and how to get there and with recommendations for affordable nearby restaurants. Guests are allowed access to the kitchen, refrigerator, and washer/dryers. The staff is friendly and the free breakfast a great value (ha ha). I do agree that the place was a bit boisterous at times, but it never went very late. I still would recommend Hôtel Marignan to budget travelers and those traveling in large groups. Definitely not for those with sensitive constitutions or those who expect luxury. We would absolutely consider staying there again.

Tip: Check out the market and take-out joints on nearby rue Mouffetard!

Other than the 6 flights of stairs (I needed the workout!), this place was awesome - friendly staff, cute & clean rooms, and right next to tons of stuff. Stayed for 11 nights, at a rate of $30 per night, and loved the morning breakfast. Tons of little stores around for bread, fruit, etc., and the metro stop is about a block away. I'd totally stay here again!

  • Liked — The hotel feel, hostel price, without the hostel dirtiness
  • Disliked — No elevator - tough to walk up 6 flights at the end of the day!
