Beautiful bookstore full of every type of book you could think of, new, antique, first editions and second hand. Upstairs there is a reading room (with a big white cat asleep on the chair) and a piano for the general public to play. Definitely one of our favourite places in Paris.

“to shop and write”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2014

i love this bookstore. they carry my first memoir, SAVING MYSELF: A LOS ANGELES CHILDHOOD. but much more than that. each saturday david barnes has a writer's critique group. there. it's a chance to bring 8-10 copies of poems or 4 pages of prose to read and have the group look over, make suggestions, and send us on our way to enjoy the evening together for a drink or if you are an early to sleep person, a chance to get home while the buses and metro are still running. they are trying it at noon for a while. i'll be anxious to see how that works. it would be a better time for me and then a chance to hope across to ile de cite to notre dame or the deportation memoirial behind notre dame, a honoring of all the jews and others killed in the camps by the Nazis.
each time i come to paris, it's a must stop place on my journey!~

“If you love nice bookstores, go here!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2014

It's right across the river from Notre Dame so it's easy to get to. The people are nice and the books are plenty. They don't allow you to take pictures and it does get really crowded (this isn't a sit and read kind of bookstore), but it has a charm and cozy-ness to it. All of the books are stamped on the inside with the bookstore logo, so it becomes a nice souvenir, too!

“It's not what it used to be!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2014 via mobile

The heart has gone and all that's left when you look closely is an overcrowded commercial bookshop with too many staff that never stop talking. My husband and I have been going to this bookshop for the past 20 years we are both avid book readers.

This was a place of reverence, the hush and tranquility when you stepped in from the street was palpable. The dusty old shelves and wanna be writers would quietly wander around speaking in hushed tones or you could find them on one of the upstairs beds reading or writing. It was truly an inspirational place.

I would always leave with several books tucked under my arm with that Shakespeare logo stamped inside to remind me long after the trip how many great experiences I had at this bookshop.

Alas, this is the case no more, I wish more people could have seen what this shop was really about 10 or more years ago when it was a truly great bookshop.

I don't think I will return....... That's is quite saddening .

“Unique experience in Paris”

We were not expecting to find such a unique shop while visiting Paris. Make sure you go upstairs to the reading room, message corner and hear the Piano!
