“Watch your wallet”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2013

At the end of the day a bookshop is a bookshop, but hey there is a bit of history to this one, and its just over the bridge from the islands that you be visiting anyway, and you might just pick up a bargain (there are certainly bargains to be had - try the book bins outside on the pavement first).

My lovely wife duly bought a book with her Visa card, and some slimeball took careful note of where she put her purse and what shelves she went to next, and maybe with the help of a colleague who may have distracted her in some way in this crowded quite pokey little bookshop, . . . when we got home soon after, the zip up purse inside the zip up shoulder bag was devoid of money, cards and drivers license. Very clever, didn't notice a thing. Not a nice feeling.

Be ever vigilant, take better precautions especially in any shoulder-to-shoulder situation because they are very very good at their job, and yes it could happen to you.

“An oasis for English speakers!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013

This was one of the places I had to see. It's a very quaint little bookstore right across from Notre Dame cathedral. The area is somewhat quieter than around Notre Dame. It was refreshing to hear English spoken after hearing nothing but French for a week. It was quite crowded when I got there, but it's still a nice place to relax a bit on the seats outside. There's two sides to the bookstore. One side sells new books and the other sells "antique" books. From the look of the people outside the bookstore, they were enjoying hearing English spoken. It's definitely worth visiting even if you don't buy anything. If you do buy something, don't forget to have them stamp your book!

“Hype destroys the point”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013

This place has a lot of history, but at essence it is really just a bookshop selling new or slightly foxed English-language books. It would be a very pleasant bookshop indeed if it wasn't for the hype surrounding it, which causes vast crowds of tourists to descend. There is always a scrum of people inside (and sometimes even a queue to get in), and most of people are saying to each other 'this is just a bookshop, what's the big deal?'.

If you have enough energy, you can fight your way up to the top floor, where you will find a couple of rooms in which you can read second-hand books for free. That's quite nice, I suppose.

“Do visit if you're visiting Notre Dame”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

Shakespeare and Company is about a 10 minute walk away from the Notre Dame. The interior is really charming but not so charming when it is so crowded because people park themselves in front of the bookshelves and start chatting so browsing is really quite difficult.

The books in there are mostly contemporary stuff, and although they do have vintage books, the collection is quite small. If you're really looking for hard-to-find editions of English books, go to England or Scotland instead.
