...then this is a MUST. Very tiny, but packed with books and atmosphere. There is even a piano for those that know how to play (not me). I could have sat in there for hours and just read random passages out of random books.

Not once, in 25 years of visiting Paris, have I missed browsing this book store to end all book stores. Sylvia, the daughter of the late owner & founder of the (2nd) Shakespeare & Co., George Whitman, has added a whole new burst of energy to this institution. She extended into the next store to add a rare, scarce, and first edition books section--which she and her staff keep adding to constantly. There are author readings, and being a very photogenic store, there always seems to be a movie-in-the-making in progress Three movies that come to mind, are, “Before Sunset”, “Le Divorce” and “Midnight In Paris”. Across the Seine from Notre Dame, this store is an interlude for the English-speaking when in Paris. It you watch any or all of the movies mentioned, you will either enjoy an introduction to the iconic store, or a nostalgic revisit. It's a must visit for the reader or collector of books.

This is a fascinating book store with so may interesting books crammed into quite a small space. The surrounding neighborhood is great. Well worth a trip.

A lot of people say your trip to paris is not complete without visiting this place and buying a book from the store, so we did.

A nice and unique place in the area. Very interesting to see and visit and so much history about this little place. The shop has good collection of books for sale - and the prices are reasonable. I bought the french/original version of Le Petit Prince and On the Road.

On our visit, there was another visitor upstairs playing the piano which was so cool.

Looking for English books in Paris may be a bit of a project, but at Shakespeare and Company you may very well find something to please you. The shop is charmingly chaotic, but the staff seem to have a photographic memory and if they have what you are looking for, they can instantly go and pick it out of the enourmous piles of books that are everywhere.
