“An exquisite little gem!”
Reviewed August 13, 2006

Hotel St Jacques is perfectly positioned in the Latin Quarter. A brief 5-10 minute walk to Notre Dame, at the base of the hill from the Pantheon (from a side view) with lots of fabulous bars, restaurants and shops only a stones throw away if you wander the beautiful cobbled streets. I booked directly through the hotel website for a triple room and I requested a view of the Pantheon & Notre Dame's towers (as seen on one of these other reviews!) and this was exactly what we got - superb! I think the rooms on the top floor have a mini balcony but we were quite happy just to pop our heads out of the window and look left and right!

The room was of an adequate size for the three of us and all our luggage with space to move around. The bathroom was small but the shower more than made up for that as it was incredibly powerful and just what you need to wake you up in the mornings. I can't comment on what the breakfasts were like as we always chose to go to a cafe or boulangerie which I would highly recommend (plenty in the immediate area) as it means you can sit, watch the world go by and enjoy your typical french breakfast!

The hotel is full of character with wonderful wall paintings and a sweeping spiral staircase which we always took down as the lift is VERY small (possibly fits four at a real squash!). I will certainly book to stay here the next time I am in Paris as this hotel really is a little gem - the price really is astounding for the location, views and comfort!

  • Liked — location, price and cleanliness
  • Disliked — The lift was really very small
  • Tips/Secrets — Request a room with a view of the Pantheon & Notre Dame's towers as they are so beautiful

Want a moderately priced hotel in Paris? Recently remodeled, the Hotel St-Jacques is located on a quiet street (rue des Ecoles) between the Pantheon and the Seine. It's a short walk to the Luxembourg Gardens and Notre Dame. Rooms are comfortable, clean and well-appointed. The multilingual staff are cordial and helpful. There are a wide range of restaurants nearby. Breakfast is extra. Rooms on the back side of the hotel are quieter. This is the place we keep coming back to when we're in Paris.

Our recent stay at Hotel Saint Jacques was very pleasant. The room, on the first floor was well appointed, typically French, with a very nice small but adequate bathroom - much more pleasant than staying in a Chain Hotel. The room was cleaned very well with clean towels daily. Although there was no air conditioning, a fan was provided. We did however have to open the window as it was extremely hot and it was rather noisy, but visiting a City that is to be expected. A room on an upper floor would be nice and perhaps we could enjoy a view towards Notre Dame - perhaps we could request this on our next visit which is already being planned. An excellent hotel far above the Two Star Rating.

I've stayed at the Hotel St. Jacques on three occasions over the past two years, starting with a two week stay in July 2004, most recently in Feb 2006. I've spent a total of 26 or 27 nights there and will return without hesitation. And I recommend it with one qualification It's a two star hotel. People who want lot of attention or need to be waited on should consider paying for a three or four star hotel.
It's clean, comfortable and has a great location: 15 minutes from Notre Dame, 5 minutes from the Pantheon, the Boule Mich and the Metro station at Place Maubert.
I find the staff friendly if occasionally aloof (except Brigitte who is always very friendly and helpful), but after all this is France. And I've had the experience of coming down with the flu two days after checking in (apparently caught on the plane), asking for recommendations at the desk after hiding out in my room for three days, and having them very helpfully offer to find me a doctor. But I ended up doing it the way the French do and went to see a pharmacist first (the one on the corner a block to the east, who was also helpful).
I found the rooms to be clean and comfortable, but small. This is, after all, a 19th century building. I especially enjoy the skeleton key locks (but use the room safe for valuables).
Most of all, it's French. With the occasional odd touch. The player piano in the breakfast room is bizarre. Picture eating your petit dejeuner listening to Perry Como singing Catch a Falling Star with the player piano banging away in accompanyment.
I plan to return. And I recommend it to friends, with that one qualification.

A beautiful little hotel in the Latin Quarter. Location could not be better. We have been staying here for the last 9 years when visiting Paris. The staff could not be more helpful or friendly. Their service has included "language and French Etiquette lessons for my 8 year old son and loads of patience as he practices his French. He is now 15 and still remembers those early trips. I have stayed in hotels with more stars in Paris on occasion, but much prefer this one. It has personal service and the hotel has history and character. Rooms are clean. Breakfast is pleasant.

Considering the pricing, location and decor, the St. Jacques is an outstanding value. Rated as a 2 star hotel, it has to be at the top of its class. Rooms are very attractive - many with wall and ceiling murals, moire wallpapers, and updated baths - and lots of history in the building and neighborhood. Convenient to many Central Paris attractions (Universities, Notre Dame, Louvre, etc.) and easy access to public transportation (Metro and bus). Desk staff is very friendly and accomodating (especially Brigitte). Bedding was very comfortable although bedspreads were rather worn. Plenty of restaurants in walking distance. A great choice even for families.

Our entire family had a wonderful time in Paris and much of it was due to this hotel and it's location in the Latin Quarter. The rooms were very comfortable with a feeling of French decor and include a fan, as like most of Paris, there is no air conditioning. The service we received could not have been better.
