“We were robbed by hotel staff”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2012

We had the worst possible experience at this hotel. It was in a terrible part of Paris where the threat of getting mugged was very real. An I-pad and other items were stolen from our room and we weren't the only people robbed while we were staying there. We tried to call the police but the hotel staff kept disconnecting our call. Avoid this hotel at all costs, they pretended not to speak English and accused us of threatening them when we asked for the police to be called if they wouldn't let us call out. The hotel management admitted that theft was going on in the hotel - didn't care. No customer service - English speaking people were targeted in the 3 robberies that occurred in the 2 days we were there. Staying here ruined our Paris trip.

Bedbugs. BEDBUGS. Need I say more? I can! Stinky. Bedbugs. Moldy. Did I mention bedbugs? We checked the mattress for signs of bedbugs the second we entered the room - we've been burned before - but saw no sign. The morning after our SECOND night, when we awoke early to get to the airport, there they were. On the mattress, the pillows, the ceiling, everywhere. The guy at front desk didn't seem shocked when we told him. He went ahead and tried to charge us the city tax (room had been pre-paid with airline miles, so that wasn't up for debate). We refused to give them any money for that [--] hole.

Otherwise, the place also had a strong cologne-y smell that wouldn't dissipate even with the windows open for our whole stay; the shower was moldy; and the staff ignored the "Do Not Disturb" sign that we posted after the front desk guy specifically advised us to use the safe.

But really, do you need to know anything more than BEDBUGS????????????

Very small room and bathroom, with no drink-making facilities. Best night sleep we've enjoyed for a long time. We were in Room 707, on the ground floor, but got disturbed at night by other guest's door latches, and no noise at all from outside! Breakfast was good and plentiful, and it was clean and Very Reasonable-pricewise. The Hotel would benefit from an improved web-site, showing more info and directions. It is actually well placed at the end of Metro No. 4 line (Porte d' Orleans) Not central, but well placed for a budget Hotel. Make sure you like the Arabian theme before booking! 3* and definately NOT 4*!

I do agree with some reviews- the room was very small, only just space around the bed and not much extra space to spread your stuff about, (one small desk and chair) and there were some slightly ropey features- a loose tap handle, ugly damp plaster over bath, pillows a bit old.....but in general we liked it. We chose it for the decor and I thought it made a nice change. We found the bed comfortable but it was very firm. Maybe if you're used to supersoft it wouldn't seem comfortable. I didn't find it noisy at all, I actually thought it was pretty well soundproofed, with the windows shut you couldn't hear outside at all, and the curtains were heavy enough for the room to be reasonably dark (a plus for me). It was a bit stuffy but better than cold if you ask me. The desk staff were perfectly nice with some good English, and one in particular was very accomodating- finding us extra pillows and making a phone call for me. My biggest beef was, on the day we left, maids trying to walk in the room 4 times, and that's even though we were out for some of it for breakast. When we'd gone out we'd put the 'do not disturb' sign up and when we returned it was removed and put back in the room! Another weird/annoying thing- there is a window in the bathroom door! Who wants to see each other in the bathroom?! We covered it up. And no tea/kettle facilities- that was a quite a surprise. Free wifi was accessible from the 1st floor and the Metro was just around the corner. The fact its out of the way of the centre was a plus- less busy.

As people has pointed out before me this is not a 4 star but a 3 star hotel. Seen from that perspective it was a nice experience. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the breakfast is decent. Being a lover of everything north african I personally liked the (not always intended) quirkiness of the decor. The room was quiet and the bathroom really nice. The only minus was the fact that there were no queen size beds, only single beds put together. Of course the location is a bit off but that´s a conscious choice after all, and the metro is easy accessible.

We had been travelling across Europe for weeks and had done most of it on the cheap in 2 and 3 star hotels and hostels. We were ready for a little luxury and decided to choose a 4 star hotel for Paris. What a mistake that we chose this one!
If we had not prepaid we would have walked out and found another hotel!
First shock was being told there was no restaurant when we asked what time we could have dinner that night and breakfast the next day.
The room was so small that we only had walking room around the bed. The TV was on top of the mini bar, there wasn't even a kettle or a teabag (unacceptable in a 4 star hotel that also had no restaurant) and the bathroom was the strangest thing I had ever seen, toilet and basin in the foreground, shower over the bath behind them….with the shower hose stretched across the opening and attached to the opposite wall meaning you either had to climb over it to get into the shower or unhook the shower head, get in and reattach it behind you!
The aircon had not been turned on and the room was so stuffy that I had to open the window. We turned on the aircon and it sounded like we had a jet in the room but we would swelter without it as the traffic noise was very loud with the window open.
The worst thing though was the bed.
Now we have become used to the European way of having 2 single beds pushed together to form one double and have had no issues with this at all. But these two beds were different heights, had a huge gap between them and slid across the floor when you rolled over.
Add to that the nasty old stained linen and lumpy pillows and how did they ever get 4 star rated!!
Oh it did have a safe though. It was in the wardrobe…but you could put it wherever you wanted since it wasn’t bolted in. Actually maybe it wasn’t a safe but a nice handy box for a thief to carry all your valuables away easily.
Paper thin walls meant we could hear every move in the room next to us, so between this and the roar of the aircon and found it impossible to sleep.
Checking out 2 days later, we were waiting for a taxi and we heard the clink of cutlery on plates...apparently a restaurant had appeared downstairs overnight! A miracle! Why did they tell us there was no restaurant?

Room Tip: Choose another hotel.

We stayed here for two nights. We had room 402 which was lovely and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. 3* not 4*. Yes, you do have to travel to get into the city, but the transport is easy and with bus going to the Eiffel Tower just around the corner. .

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
How would you know, before actually entering the Villa Royale Montsouris, that you would be crossing the Mediterranean? The lobby, decorated in Andalusian-Moorish style, is a perfect representation of the charms of the Orient. Colonnades and vaulted ceilings, copper, zelliges and wrought iron make the hotel look like a traditional Moroccan riad. Combine the stories of One Thousand and One Nights with draperies, sheer curtains and precious fabrics and the rooms seem to jump straight of oriental palaces. The elements of the decor bring brightly-coloured touches to the place: the reds of the floor tiles and the ochres of the earthenware, the Majorelle blue of the doors, which, when closed, make Paris seem very far away. In this exotic and wonderful universe, the service provided by the attentive staff add a personal note to the unique charm of the establishment, located in a peaceful district of the Capital, near the Parc de Montsouris and the tram that’s a direct connection with the Porte de Versailles Convention and Exhibition Centre. ... more   less
