“Moulin Rouge”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

Dinner was fantastic and overall the show was brilliant but overpriced .
I was glad I went and wouldn't have missed the experience.

“Tits and bums with a side serving of museums and George sands.”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

This area is the border between the 9th and 18th arrondissements, named after the sculpture Jean-Baptist Pigalle. it has also acquired many unsavoury and unflattering names,as well. Think titles like sexdrome and cheap peep-shows, which are but a small token of the gems to be explored hereabouts.
Yes,its famous for many sex shops and its certainly touristy but its also the home to musical retail especially instruments, guitars, drums and accessories.
Luminaries of the art and literary world had studios here and lived in the community. The iconic Toulouse Lautrec,Picasso,Van Gogh,as well as, Maurice Neumont and Dali whose works can be seen at the nearby espace.
This area is home to the old theatre,Grand Guignol and boasts the Musee de l'Eroticism. Yes,without a doubt, its the epicentre of 'Paris by Night" experience and fields the famous cabaret "Moulin Rouge' immortalised by Toulouse -lautrec as well as, topless and nude shows.
To get here, first get that lascivious smile off your dial, then get off the Metro station at Pigalle or the end-point of the Montmartrebus.
A film was made in 1994,called 'Pigalle',set here, as well as,the police comedy 'My New Partner'. Edith Piaf made the album ' La rue Pigalle' and Maurice Chavalier wrote the enchanting 'Place Pigalle".
Pigalle is your base-camp when making your assault on Montmartre's Mt.Everest....... the Basilica Sacre-Coure. It certainly has the reputation for sleaze, sex and peep-shows,but is crewed by a younger, hipper and resolutely more wholesome crowd that line the pavements, queuing to get into cool music clubs like la machine du Moulin Rouge,Boule noir and la cigale.
While you perambulate,do not overlook the quarter of Nouvelle athenes, named after the neoclasssic mansions built by waves of artists, writers and composers in the early 19th century. Just stroll rue de la Tour- des- Dames, rue Ballu and rue de la Rochefoucauld, where you get to visit Musee Gustave moreau and Musee de la vie Romantique displaying mementoes of George Sand's life . If you come in summer, you will experience the lovely rose garden which turns into a tea-room.
I love this neighbourhood. The tits and bums are certainly up there,as well.

“Avoid the Red Light District in Paris”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

I wish I would have read previous reviews of this forum. The experience of "well-travelled20" below is exactly what happened to us also. This place is called Pussy World, and should be avoided as the plague. 20 Euro entry, 20 euro drinks each and a lady that indeed asks a lady drink but be aware it costs you 80 euro! On top of all that, since I did not have enough cash for these exorbitant prices, I was stupid enough to pay the rest with my credit card. And you guessed it: after my vacation I see an extra 200 euro charge on my card! So, beware. Even though I am experienced with these places in other cities (especially Asia) Paris is so bad I could never have expected this. AVOID it! A week later we went to Amsterdam, and that is just so much better. A safe and enjoyable area. Paris can take a big example to Amsterdam.

“Be careful”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

It may sound like a fun night out or a tourist's dream of seeing a world-famous neighbourhood or re-living Moulin Rouge, but this place is difficult to stomach. There are many aggressive sex-workers and pimps who stand in front of their establishments harassing passers-by and it can be upsetting to see the squalor of it all. During the day, it's somewhat muted, but come 7pm/nightfall and you'd best avoid the area, even to see the Moulin Rouge or Sacre Cor in Montmartre, better things to do in Paris.

“Watch out!”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

This district has gone downhill over the years. The constant aggressive solicitation by pimps was especially annoying. For women traveling alone, use the middle strip between the two roads, it is safer....One may not be able to avoid these experiences on the way to magical Montmartre. Just go with awareness and a grain of gruffness. Too bad. The powers that be should find a way to bring the magic BACK to Pigalle perhaps with mime people, actors, street theatre, joy and liveliness....not the dregs of the earth.
