La defense is the business district of Paris, names aptly the 'mini Manhatten' The high rise stylish tower blocks resemble the US and have lovely trees planted around the area as well as art sculptures. It's pretty quiet, so a good place to stay. Outside the metro there's a nice spot where you can see the grand arche (as picturered) on one side and then the eiffel tower from the other side.

I was intrigued by this massive modern structure since I saw it from a distance on my first trip to Paris. When I returned, it was high on my list to visit.

I went to see the Grande Arche today and left feeling puzzled. The main structure has so much power and clarity of design and the views are amazing, but the "cloud" looks like a half-assed addition, the glass elevators look abandoned and the place was filthy. Some later research told me that the elevators are closed because of an accident in 2010. They look to be suddenly abandoned with food wrappers and other trash behind the glass of the ticket booth and broken glass from a structure in the queue area. It had nearly a post-apocalyptic feel to it that made me wonder what happened that caused the operation to shut down without cleaning up or securing things.

When I crawled out of the subway for the very first time all I thought was "Damn, I must be in future!" The district is full of huge modern buildings of glass and ultimately there's the colossal "Grande Arche." In fact this Arc is the only thing worth seeing, the rest are "just office buildings." When there's good visibility one can see the "Arc de Triomphe" directly from the Grande Arche. Cool. And the 4Temps mall is one of the biggest ones far and near.

The precinct was large and the shopping good. The restaurants were good value but mainly from large chains.
Some interesting architecture and plenty going on.
