For its price I'd recommend it. The cheapeast rooms are not to be ashamed of in term of size and atmosphere (very old France but not kitch), the reception hall was quite beautiful, and the staff was discret but friendly. I only regret the breakfast was not served after 10 and that there was only one unique eletric plug in the bedroom.

We chose this hotel after much research (mostly on TA, thank you fellow contributors). We'd found a really good Eurostar deal for the return journey, so wanted a cheapish hotel for an unexpected short city break. Criteria were price, cleanliness, reasonably central, situated near metro, walking distance from restaurants and some places of interest. We had an idea of the areas from a previous trip a few years back, and had a fancy for the arty Montmartre district. We finally settled on Hotel Royal Fromentin.

Accommodation in Paris is expensive, and the cheapest places have shared bathrooms and/or are too far out. We wouldn't want either, and Royal Fromentin was one of the cheapest which were acceptable to us. The previous reviews of this hotel are generally accurate, as are the photos. Our room, though, was much smaller than the photos suggested, and the small, old fashioned TV only had 2 English language stations (news channels) as far as we could see. However, it was clean, the bed was comfortable and the water was always hot. We had a non-detachable shower which sufficed, but would have really liked one of the rooms with a bath for soaking after such a lot of walking. The size of the room was not a problem - a large window opened out to the rear of the hotel, providing light - and a place to keep our milk chilled - nor was the TV. problematic as, for the limited time we were not out, we were very happy to sit in the delightful art deco salon with its little bar. (The online photos are accurate.) The hotel was well heated. We had no noise problem from inside or outside. Some areas were a bit shabby and worn, but the good bits far outweighed the bad, we felt.

Staff were pleasant and helpful. To save any confusion caused by our limited French, and the extortionate charges of our mobile service provider, one reception member willingly rang a restaurant we had picked, and booked us a table, for example.

Breakfast was coffee/tea/chocolate, orange juice, a choice of cereal, natural yoghurt, cartons of stewed apple puree, wholemeal and white baguette and sweet croissant, with butter and a choice of processed cheese, jam, honey, chocolate spread.

Finally, the mixed reviews on the area: Rue Fromentin, around 20 minutes walk from the Gare du Nord, is just off the main Boulevard Clichy, equidistant between Blanche (by the Moulin Rouge) and Pigalle metro stations - both of which we used in perfect safety during daytime. As we had no reason to use the metro at night, I cannot say more. There are lots of sex shops along the boulevard, but the window displays are tacky, rather than disgusting or threatening, in my opinion. Personally, I would only feel uncomfortable in the company of a child or youth. (The doorways are curtained, so you would have to make an effort to see inside most of these shops!) There were some no-doubt sleezy clubs but, again, these were behind closed doors. Because we walked so much, then walked to and from our evening restaurants ('La Rilette' and the wonderful 'Hugo'), not because we were in any fear, we were back at the hotel by 10.30pm-ish. I don't know if things changed later, but whilst we wandered back, there was nothing to make us feel at all ill at ease, not even any overt prostitution. If anyone finds even this too unpleasant, cross the boulevard and you are almost in the Abbbesses area (with Sacre Couer -which could be seen from our window), or take the short walk down Rue Fromantin for the start of the Montmatre district - and some very nice restaurants.

In conclusion, it's a nice 3-star hotel with a good feel for 'La Belle Epoque' in an area, possibly not of choice, but not a problem either. Thanks TA contributors for helping us make this choice.

Room Tip: Some rooms have baths, some only showers.

found this hotel from a recommendation from a friend and really couldn't fault it. We stayed on the 5th floor and had a amazing view of the sacre-Coeur from the balcony. The room although not huge had a lovely deep bath and a powerful shower and was spotless. The only downside was that our twin beds were pushed together in the room and very difficult to move as the bedside cabinets were unmovable. This was only a problem on the first night as once we were use to them, slapping each other in the head didn't happen as much! I found the staff very pleasant especially the south African night receptionist. I found the location to be great. Even tho there were a lot of sex shops on the main road once you go up any of the side roads you will find amazing restaurants and bistro's and quirky clothes shops. The metro was great and you could get anywhere on it for about £1 a trip.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony if you can and the rooms can get a bit warm at night so we had our balcony...

I found the staff friendly and helpful, the breakfast was good and the room warm and comfortable. The hotel is within easy walking distance from the metro and close to Montmartre. There are a good selection of restaurants close by.

I was in a short visit trip, for a week end at Paris and I found this hotel,in the heart of erotic shops. But the street and the hotel are very quiet and clean. The hotel has a large room, large bathroom and was very clean.I have also breakfast, very consistent, different type of cheese, butter, jams, cereals and yogurt ,baguette and fresh croissant, coffee and tea.I stayed at 5 th floor and the room without a view but quiet. The hotel is placed between Place Pigalle and Moulin Rouge. Also very near is a Miniprix,a shop like M&S with food and clothes.very near is a Mac Donald's and a Carrefour. From the hotel to Sacre Coeur was a walk about 20 minutes.I was very pleased. The only minus is that the room was vaguely smelled of cigarette,me being a non smoker.
