Having read about them and seen them in movies, you cannot really appreciate the sound of the bells of Notre-Dame until you sit down in front of the cathedral and wait for them to chime. It really is a must on any trip to Paris.

If you are visiting the Notre Dame, it is definitely worth all the stairs to see the view from the top. Myself and my partner actually got to enjoy this experience free of charge due to being under 25, which is a common benefit in Paris. The first level was far more impressive than the very top we felt, but if you're going to do it you have to go all the way to the top.
The stairs close at 5pm, so you cannot see the view of the night. So we found it best to get there at 10am when it was opening and beat the crowd, and get to listen to the bells being played whilst up there.

It pays off to wait even an hour to take a ride up the towers. You will be able up-close the gargoyles and see the entire architecture of the cathedral. You will find here one of the best places to take photographs of the landscape from Paris' center.

Be aware of pickpockets as this place and almost all the best things to visit in Paris are full of people wanting to rip you off

Free as an EU traveller, and an incredible view. Walking up those winding staircases adds to the gothic feel of the place.

Expect to wait in line and a spiral, narrow staircase walk up to the most amazing views of Paris from the top of the towers. It's absolutely worth it. Just go on a clear day
