Auberge de Jeunesse MIJE Fourcy
Ranked #3 of 181 Specialty Lodging in Paris
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 21, 2009

My friend and I stayed 3 nights at MIJE Fourcy in September, we were very impressed with its location- right next to a metro station and within 10 mins walking distance to Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter!

The bulding itself was quite pleasent to look at too with a beautiful countyard and nice decoration on the fround floor. Staff were very friendly and willing to help, though there is a curfew it didn't matter as long as we let them know that we will be out til late.

We stayed in a double room which was very simple and small but also very clean with a shower, had to share the toilets but that was not a problem at all. There is also a hair dryer on the ground floor female bathroom.

The one thing I really didn't like was the breakfast- bread was either stone solid or extremely chewy so we gave it a miss after the first morning and headed for the cafe and bakery nearby instead (my friend even had a chocolate eclair for breakfast!)

Also, you need to phone before 12pm on the day of arrival to confirm your reservation. We had to pay more than stated on the confirmation email upon arrival, but since it wasn't that much more we didn't question why. One more thing is that you don't have a choice in which of the MIJE hostel you would stay in, you basically send them an email with all the details and then they send you one back telling you which one you have been allocated to.

Overall a very nice hostel at a decent price!

Since the moment I called the hostel for the booking the service was excellent. All the time they were trying to help us, something that is difficult to find in a young hostel. The beds were comfortable and the room had it's own shower.
Breakfast was good and the place was really good located...the metro was very near and the hostel was 2 blocks away from the Pont Marie (the most romantic bridge in Paris).
So definitely I will go back

It is in a great spot so so close to notre dame, it is a long walk to the eiffel tower but there are metro stations all over the city, we walked all over the place to the louvre etc which is not at all far away. Rivoli street runs parallel to the quiet street that MIJE Fourcy is on and it has supermarkets sushi restaurants pizza places and everything. We were really happy with how clean it was, we had a shower but shared a bathroom which was no problem at all. Bring a towel and soap but stop to have a chat with the staff they are so friendly and breakfast is great!

Location:

Chatalet Les Halles metro station is very difficult to use (busy, dirty, very confusing) and can get a very sketchy at night, so I'd recommend getting a taxi or trying to get to Hotel de Ville instead.

Otherwise the location is great, both the Fourcy and Maubisson are not on main roads but on safe and quiet side streets.

The Rue de Rivoli is a great main street to orient you for walking just about anywhere in Paris. We do walk more than most, but we literally did not get on any other transport after arriving the first day, because it's such a convenient location.

Room:

We stayed in a room of 6 (4 bunk beds, 2 singles, 2 bathrooms). The room and sheets were clean. Great individual lamps next to everyone's beds (but it's the small things you appreciate, right?).

The only individual lockers were down in the reception (small ones) and in the baggage room (large ones), but they were easy to use with a 1 euro coin you got back in the end. Each room locks though, and everyone has an individual key so we weren't worried at all.

As other peope have mentioned, there's no soap or towels in the bathrooms, but that's to be expected for the price. Otherwise, they were very clean, and there were no problems with hot water.

Service:

As other people have mentined, you really need to do everything they tell you to - email them what time you expect to get there, then call them the day before you arrive to confirm, and then check your email again in the last possible moment. I emailed them 2 days before we arrived letting them know that we were on a late flight and wouldn't arrive till about 10 pm and, since they'd requested an email, assumed I didn't have to call to reconfirm.

We arrived at the Maubisson late with all our gear only to find that they didn't have our booking! It turned out that they had a spare room at the Fourcy though, so off we stompted again with all our things.

They really operate as one big hotel and it's not unheard of that your location is changed before you arrive, or if you decide to stay longer than you originally booked for. The only way to be sure is to pay all your nights in advance for the one location. On the other hand, they are all very close to each other and they are all located in beautiful buildings, so it really shouldn't be that much of a problem, though I understand the annoyance if you've already unpacked and have to go off again.

I checked my email again after we'd been at the Fourcy for 2 days only to find that they *had* actually emailed to let me know that we should go to the Fourcy and not the Maubisson. Maybe my bad, but I don't have internet access 24/7 when travelling.

Otherwise the staff were very friendly, there are security guards on all night in all the hostels, and the front door is locked - you can get in by ringing the bell and having your ID/room key checked. (Though our guard seemed to be missing when we tried to check out again at 4am for an early flight).

Breakfast was good - yes, it's true, you can't get a second serving, more orange juice etc, but overall I've had much much worse breakfasts. It was a baguette (fresh), butter, jam, croissant, orange juice and a tea/coffee/hot chocolate.

I would absolutely recommend it, and am in the process of trying to book there again for another 3 nights on my way back to Australia. (I will call to confirm this time!)

MIJE is not your typical hostel. It was quiet and clean! The location is very central, only a short block from St. Paul metro and walking distance to Notre Dame. There is also a grocery store around the corner.

I stayed in a 6 person room. It had 2 showers and basins and the toilet is shared in the hall. I was pleasantly surprised that the showers and toilet was always clean. However, they did not provide any hand soap for the bathroom! Another tip, they have a hair dryer in the girl's toilet on the first floor. Each bed had plenty of storage (no locker) and even had hangers to place your clothes. No room fan, but plently of windows. I liked that each person had their own light beside their bed.

The complimentary breakfast was decent but it's the same each day. Try the hot chocolate, it's delicious and savour your orange juice as you are only allowed one cup!

I would return to MIJE again. Reservation was simple, but make sure you call to confirm if you are arriving after 12 noon.

INTRO
I stayed at the MIJE on a school trip in July 2007. It was very hot throughout the stay. We had to open all the windows throughout the night in order to get to sleep. It is in a nice area of Paris, and is a very beautiful building.

THE MIJE ITSELF
The MIJE is split up into different sections which have to be accessed by a central courtyard. The building is very beautiful but hard to navigate due to extremely strange, thin staircases and corridors which look the same and go on turning forever. There is a strange old lift which looks like it is about to collapse and is very difficult to find. The MIJE staff were quite friendly during the day, but in the night when some of us had lost our room key cards, the managers got ticked off and would ignore you if you asked for a replacement. The rooms were good, but basic. The bathroom does not have a door! It only has two shutters which do not nearly cover the entrance to the bathroom. There is no privacy when showering. The food was ok at best, and sometimes horrible. We were at the Aqualud water park and some of us got out of the water early to gorge ourselves on fast food, without our teachers knowing, as they forced us to try and eat the meals. The drink at every meal was mouthwash: no joke! I will post some photos of the mouthwash.

VERDICT
A nice youth hostel in a good area of Paris, excellent value for money but strange at times.

I really liked this hostel!
The hostel has loads of character and has a really nice feel to it. We stayed there in July 2007 and found it to be more than adequate, there is a beautiful view of the seine, the Eiffel tower looked gorgeous a night and there was the a lovely buzz . .. . . PARIS
LOVED THE BREAKFAST

Disadvantages - Not many, the food was nice, but the drinks were definably mouthwash green + red = Brown (we did this experiment)
there was a creepy picture of some woman on a building outside and there was no toilet in the rooms, this was at the end of the corridor.

For a trip away i would give it 100%, it is really nice, the staff are friendly and it is all furnished using stuff form Ikea!!
what a place!
