We stayed at Hotel Saint Germain for our Honeymoon in September 2011. The front desk staff were very friendly (and spoke perfectly clear English). Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, but they graciously locked up our bags and we strolled the neighborhood.
In about 10 minutes, we were at Luxembourg Gardens, which was simply beautiful, and the walk itself through the neighborhood was fun too-lots of shops and cafes. The hotel is also a close walk to the Montparnasse Tower, which we bought tickets for the observatory and enjoyed a glass of wine and the beautiful city views before dinner one night-a great way to see the city (just think: if you do the top of the Eiffel instead, it won't be in any of your pictures! That was our logic, and, it's much less crowded) There's also a nearby subway stop which was also quite convenient.
Anyway, when we got back to the hotel and our room was ready, we were shocked by the room -I have no other way to describe it other than it looked like what I imagine a brothel room would in India...really dark and dreary, small, tiny bed...we were not pleased to say the least.
We noticed a sign in the elevator that was allowing upgrades to the "newly renovated" rooms for not much more/night, so we opted for it. WHAT a difference! We couldn't even believe it was the same hotel.
At this point this in time my review is from an experience 1.5 years ago, so perhaps the entire hotel has now been renovated-I would hope so.
The minor complaint with the new room was it was so HOT in the room at night, and we couldn't get the air to cool down even after asking the front desk to take a look at it. Opening the window was great during the day for fresh air and street watching, but at night, to cool our room down, it was just far too noisy from all the street traffic.
Breakfast was served in a common room on the 2nd floor every morning and was tasty, convenient, and included in our stay (we booked thru Virgin Vacations). And, the staff was very friendly the entire time.
All in all it was a good hotel, and on any other trip it would've been just fine, but for our honeymoon I was hoping for something a little more special.
