Grand Hotel des Gobelins

We were very pleased with this hotel. The room was large for a European hotel, and the bathroom was one we could actually move around in. We thought there would be street noise, since we were on the first floor and the hotel is on a large boulevard, but with the heavy curtains closed, we didn't hear a thing -- slept soundly! Breakfast was standard European continental fare with wonderful croissants. The hotel is close to the Les Gobelins Metro stop, which means easy access to other parts of the city, and there are several nice shopping and eating areas within walking distance. All of the staff were friendly and helpful.

To start - no, I do not believe the internet makes or breaks a trip / hotel stay, but for myself (who was traveling for business and pleasure) it was difficult to do much of anything online during peak times (~6pm to 11pm). I do think it's something that travelers need to consider however. When I asked the front desk about the slowness / lack of connection, they suggested I try using it in the lobby.

Location: On a lively street (St Marcel), a few steps away from a small grocery store (Carrefour), right in the middle of a few pubs and restaurants, and less than a 5 minute walk to the Metro. The closest stop is Les Gobelins (line #7), which takes you direct to Pont Neuf and the Louvre without needing to transfer lines. It's cheap to take the metro, and very convenient so I would suggest anyone who wants to get around do it with the train!

Room: We stayed in a "triple occupancy" room, which cost us ~160 E per night (not cheap, but we booked last minute.) It was quite large by Paris standards - in the bedroom we had a queen size bed, with a smaller double bed beside it (where a couch would likely make its home, were it not for the extra bed being there.) We had a view of the street through the French balcony, which was fantastic. The bathroom is split - the shower and sink is in one room (shower was huge, a lot of room in general in the shower area) and the toilet is in another, much smaller room (it was smaller than a small airplane bathroom.) Room was very clean, didn't have the typical "Paris boutique" smell to it, and the cleaners did a great job each day. I can't complain at all about the room, it was very good.

Service: service was fantastic. All of the front desk folks we talked to were very helpful, telling us what tour buses to take, how to get around using the metro, and they booked us a cab to take us to the airport (which showed up right on time!) Interesting / odd thing you will encounter: you need to leave your key with the front desk anytime you leave the property. It's a real "key", not an electronic one, which is likely why you need to not take a chance losing it.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel for travelers. The only downside was the price - I'm sure you can find a similar boutique for less than 160 E. Like I said however, I booked last minute, which is likely why the cost was high.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces the street

Metro stations and buses to all parts of Paris very near. Perfectly situated for cheap good meals in the Quartier Latin with easy links to all central Paris. A trip to the Chateau de Versailles was easy as well. A small but clean and functional room, polite helpful staff with a very good continental breakfast all at a reasonable price. The free wi-fi was very useful as well. A great short trip.

We stayed here for a 2 night weekend trip to Paris. Only a 5 minute walk from a couple of metro stations it was easy to find and warmly welcomed despite the lateness of our arrival. The room (and in fact the hotel) was compact but perfectly comfortable and clean. Breakfast was busy - we had to wait both mornings but was good simple continental style.

For my first time to Paris this was a great location to stay in. Did find it a bit weird to have to leave the keys at reception whenever we went out, but were always remembered and never had to wait for the receptionist to get them. Breakfast was mediocre and is served in a tiny room, if the hotel is busy you will have to wait for a table, they did however offer breakfast in the room at no extra charge. Would go again!

The hotel is close to the food-paradise rue Mouffetard, where you find great bistros, wine stores, brasseries, candy shops and street fruit sellers.

It's also very close the Gobelins metro station (line 7), making your journeys from/to the hotel easy and fast.

Nice staff, clean rooms, free wi-fi.

The breakfast is expensive, though - 12 euros per person. You can do better on the street.

On the same street and very close to the hotel there is a general food and drink store. It opens late, around 3pm, closes at midnight, and it is hot deal for stranded tourists coming to the hotel at night. You will be amazed by the number of languages the place owner can handle!

There is also a very convenient Carrefour supermarket right beside the hotel.
