A very pleasant hotel in a cosmopolitan part of the city. Situated at the end of the metro line 4.

It's not ideal for those seeking the picture postcard Paris, but its better suited for anyone who wants to see the real day-to-day city.

How we ended up here: We made our hotel bookings for Paris at the last minute, and all moderately priced hotels in the usual tourist areas were taken. We had to choose between going upscale and paying through the nose or going downscale into an area not known as a tourist destination.... and spending our money on food. We did not regret choosing this Ibis property in Clignancourt, despite some issues as noted below.

Venue: The hotel is located in an immigrant neighborhood near the terminus of a metro line. We got along fine. We enjoyed sampling French and North African specialties in local restaurants. A bonus here -- the prices on assorted baked goods and other treats were far lower than in the usual tourist areas. Our friends in Paris had told us that normal urban precautions were appropriate, so we did not venture out late at night. The streets were bustling with life in the early evenings and we walked about freely until 9 PM or so.

Accommodations: Our nominal triple was very very small and was very very reasonably priced. We had difficulty fitting three people with modest luggage in the room. Bathroom was tiny, with shower but no tub. You get what you pay for. Or just a bit less. This was really a double, not a triple.

Breakfast: The breakfast room was overcrowded and the selections were limited. We opted to hit the streets and forage for food outside.

Business Services: The hotel staff handled three telephone messages efficiently, but misplaced one important message. I almost missed a key appointment when it turned up six hours after the call. A fax was delivered promptly to the room. One should NOT expect to find decent business support in a hotel in this class......

Advice: My wife and daughter are fluent in French, and they had a splendid time. My French is awful, but I managed to communicate with staff. Guests who spoke no French at all appeared to have some difficulty.

The Ibis hotel Ornano offers fine value for money and the area is not half as bad as people are depicting it.

The good: facilities nearby are great (McDo, good bakery, metro and supermarket all nextdoor). Staff is helpful and friendly and the rooms are small but clean. Building is a nice 19th century building on one of Paris' grand boulevards. Neighbourhood is lively with relatively a lot of migrants. Not particularly bad unless you are a racist or a xenophobe.

Paid parking lot nearby (E 21 per 24h as of 12/2005) and free parking in St Ouen (outside the periferique, also nearby).

Big flee market in St Ouen on saturday, sunday and mondays.

The bad: rooms may be too small for some tastes, but this seems to be the norm in Paris (and to most, doesn't pose any problem).

Location is off-centre in Montmartre, which is already off-centre in Paris. Expect a 15 minute walk to the area in Montmartre that receives raving reviews (Sacre Coeur and surroundings) or a 15 minute metroride to the city centre.

---------------

The hotel is functional and basic, don't expect huge amounts of charm or luxury. Atmosphere is fine though. Would recommend it and would go there again.

We are two young female professionals who went to Paris for a long weekend. We chose the this hotel mainly based on price and also location. We arrived late in the evening and were apalled at the area. It seemed very unsafe, especially for two women. We decided to change to another hotel immediately as we figured it would be better spending a little more money in a better location than having to take taxis everywhere. I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone.

My family and I stayed in this hotel the first week in July. The main problem with this hotel is the neighborhood - not good! When I stepped out of the metro (subway) the first day, one block below the hotel, I felt like I was in a rough neighborhood, like the Bronx, NY. Shady, dirty, the slums of Paris. Not safe to walk the streets after dark alone. In a group, it's fine - but not a tourist area at all! Also, the hotel does not have air conditioning, as advertised. Just windows with no screens. Our room stunk of cigarette smoke. The picture of the hotel they show in the advertisements is not of this hotel! Lastly, it was a long ride on the metro down to central paris - about 15/18 stops - 30 minutes - and the Paris metro was 90 - 100 degrees - uncomfortably hot - even on a cool day. So, there was no going back to the room during the day for a break because it was too long of a trip. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.
