Hotel des Ecrivains
Ranked #911 of 1,803 Hotels in Paris
Reviewed August 14, 2011

This hotel has 2 stars which is fitting.
Here are the goog things about it:
- directly in the center of Paris
- reception is open 24 hours
- breakfast was ok
- internet is very good, easy excess and fast
- big TV
And now the bad ones:
- the house is old with very thin walls and flores. you here every step of your neighbour
- the waterpipes are old and loud
- the lift is tiny and it makes the house shiver when used
- the staff doesn't speak much english
- part of the ferniture is not usable but only decoration
- room is tiny, bathrooms tiny

It's clean and the staff is friendly - that's more than you'll get in many hotels in Paris. The rooms and bathrooms are a little small, the elevator tiny and slow and the stairs wonky, but this is Paris so get used to it unless you want to pay top dollar. We were pleasantly surprised by what we got for our money here.

This is a budget hotel, but a very good one by Parisian standards. It's cleaned every day, the bed is fairly comfortable and it's not on a big street so the noise isn't too bad. The room is a good size compared to what you get here otherwise: there is a closet and you can put your bag on the floor without having to jump over it later on. The decor might be a little old, but everything worked in our room and we have no complaints considering the price point.

The staff is friendly and helpful. Not everyone speaks English very well, but despite our lack of French we managed to get the information and help we needed. After checking out we were able to leave our luggage until we had to leave for the airport.

The metro station Place d'Italie is close by (15-20 minutes to the Seine), as are cafés and bakeries for buying breakfast. Several bus lines pass though the plaza and you'll get to beautiful parks within minutes. This is a fairly quiet residential area, but you can find plenty of good restaurants here.

Friendly reception staff, clean room, but very old fashioned and basic furniture and décor. Breakfast not included in the price! Very warm and comfortable bed.

We have stayed at Hotel des Arts several times over the last ten years or more. It is excellent value for the money. Always very nice welcome at the reception, the breakfast is cheap but very satisfying, served efficiently by a nice and friendly portuguese woman. Rooms are small like elsewhere in Paris. But they are clean and sufficient in size with TV and new bathrooms. The hotel is NOT situated in the latin quarter but close to Place d'Italie, from where you can reach most of Paris in few minutes either by foot or metro. Highly recommended!

This was the 3rd stop for us on a 6 week honeymoon, so value for money was important.

We got a bit confused from reviews when researching Paris as there are in fact 2 Hotel des Arts...so make sure you are looking at the right review.

We were very happy with our stay...rooms were clean, beds comfy, towels fine, staff friendly (when they spoke english) and the best value breakfast we had on our whole trip through Europe (for around EUR7 or so I think)...it was great!

Good location, great little bar/pub to the left as you leave the hotel
...and we loved the little balcony that you could hang out of, even though the views were just ok...it was Paris and that was all that mattered.

Had a rickety little lift that my husband wouldn't take...but I thought fine. Would definitely stay again. Great value for money.

My hubby and I stayed at this hotel for our first anniversary in December 2006.
I was very concerned after booking and looking at some of the reviews of this hotel, as many mentioned the overbooking disasters they'd had. I took this on bored and emailed them the day before we left asking for confirmation of our booking, everything was fine, and we booked in successfully and quickly the following day.
We found the reception staff friendly enough, and more than helpful. Our room was small, but couldnt of asked for a nicer place to stay. The hotel is in a great location!! We had a fab stay

Had used this hotel on a Paris trip last year and had enjoyed a very pleasent stay, i was therefore looking forward to another enjoyable 4 day break.

Upon arriving at the hotel my boyfriend and i discovered that instead of being given the double bed room i had booked via the hotel website we had in fact been allocated a room consisting of 2 single beds pushed together. Upon going down to reception to query this i was informed by receptionist that i had asked for a room with a view (this was in fact false,my only request upon booking had been a double room) and that the only rooms with a view left were single bedded! I asked for us to be moved to a double bedded room and was told there were none left ,i was informed that if we came down the next day and asked we would be moved to a double room.

Upon going down the next day, after an uncomfortable night falling down the gap in the beds, we were told it was too late to move as our room had not been cleaned and cleaners were leaving in half and hour (cleaners were infact there for at least another 2 hours after) The receptionists answer to our problem was to push the beds together and to come down (again )tomorrow!

Went down at 10am next day and were told that we did not need to move rooms and that the single beds in our room would be replaced with a double. However shortly after cleaner came in and started covering our 2 single beds with a double bedsheet! Boyfriend went back to reception and was told we could move to another room, then as soon as he came back upstairs the phone rang and we were told we could not move as it would mean hotel would have to pay to clean the room twice and that we should have come down to ask earlier (despite having been down at 10am!)

Boyfriend went back down to complain (again) and this time we were told we could move to another room. We were then moved to possibly the pokiest room in hotel, the bathroom stank of smoke and room was right next to lift and vending machine making sleep impossible for most part of the night (but hey at least we had a double bed)

The whole experience was incredibly stressful and upsetting,we were fobbed off with excuse after excuse by unhelpful, uncaring staff who are basically only interested in taking your money and providing zero service in return. My previous good memories of this hotel have been destroyed and my advice to anyone looking for a decent place to stay in paris would be avoid hotel des arts.
