Great transit system, really busy, works well. But a muted at pass when you land at the airport. It is the simplest way to go if you are in Paris a few days. If your smartphone has an App Store, see if they have an offline metro app that plans your route. This is an absolute must as it becomes really easy to get around. We bought a 4 day zone 1 to 5 pass and had no issues at all. A word of warning - my wallet was stolen on a very busy train that was crowded and this was ally an inconvenience, so don't carrY stuff in pockets, rather a inner zip pocket in a backpack or sling bag and keep the bag in front of you in a crowd!

Not just the Metro; the bus and tram system, including the Montmartre Funicular. A station is never more than a few minutes walk away, and the system is very efficient and reliable. Although some stations and trains need an update but they just have that charm from the old days that just works.

Tip: Beware of your surroundings and look out for pickpockets. Train cars can get quite crowded so watch out for your belongings.

The metro is so easy to use, colour coordinated and numbered with easy to follow maps. Some stations even have Helpers who are on hand to help tourists get to their destination. Easy to use ticket machines and best of all, really cost effective. We paid 13.5 euros for each book of 10 tickets and each ticket is used twice. However, there are quite a lot of stairs! Your calves will feel it by the end of the day!! Don't use a taxi, go by Metro!!

Our first choice is always to walk unless it is just too far (how far is too far is up to each person) to get to where we want to go. After all we go to Paris to see Paris and you don't see as much of it if you go underground. Walk and enjoy what this lovely city looks like. It has to be 30 minutes by fast walk to make us use public transport and sometimes we walk anyway if it is through a new neighborhood that we want to see. But in a big city you sometimes want to get to your destination a bit faster. Plus at the end of the day and walking all over the place if feels good to use the metro.
We always think we will use buses more and the metro less but we don't. The metro is so easy to figure out and buses are more complicated for visitors. Plus you have to wait for buses and they get bogged down in traffic and you might get there faster by walking. The metro comes very frequently. Sometimes when every car looks forbidding with a packed out look we just wait three minutes or so for the next one. Yes, I am aware that sometimes you need to transfer lines and the correspondence seems like a mile away.
We have not found many rude people on the metro. They are not all that grungy. And sometimes you even get a musician to entertain for a couple of minutes.
Get your pass or buy a carnet and ride when it seems appropriate. You're staying in the Marais and you want to visit the Eiffel Tower or the the Arc de Triomphe. If you can'g figure out a bus ride take the metro and get there fast.
