Like most old hotels, the rooms vary in size, and yes, the nicest rooms are the ones on the net, and they cost more. The small, inside rooms are fine if youre just staying for a couple of days and you need a quiet place to sleep in a clean room. But no, there's no view of anything but the next building. And being an old building, the maintenence folks are busy all day. In old hotels, whether Paris, New York, or London, you never know what you're going to get for a problem. My impression is that this Hotel does their best to address them.
Taxis. This hotel is right in front of a busy taxi stand. Walk out the front door and take the cab at the front of the line. Calling a cab is unneccessary. Even during the general strike in France, there were cabs available. Carnot Street at the Arc is a major Paris hub for bus and cab, as well as an RER and metro stop.
If you get the concierge to call a cab, know that Paris taxis, like most large cities, charge from the moment they start out to pick you up, not from door to door. So, the meter is running from the time the phone gets put down, not from the time the cab shows at the hotel. That's standard, and it can make a 6 euro trip cost 20. If theis is what you want, than be prepared to pay for it.
Phone calls. I made a few short long distant calls (direct dialed), and was pleasantly surprised by the cost (total was 5 - 6 euros.)
The staff were courteous and professional.
The area is excellent.
I had no problems. if you plan to spend any time in your room other than sleeping and showering, pay more for a bigger room.
If the price of breakfast here is too steep, the cafe across the street has good food (L'Empereur), and 100 feet past that there's a McD's and Quick Burger, of youre looking for breakfast for pocket change.
Would stay again.
