“Find Another Hotel!”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

This hotel has a good location on a quiet street, within two blocks of the metro station and bus lines. The staff, however, cannot be trusted not to steal from the rooms. Forty U.S. dollars were stolen from one of our suitcases. The bills had been placed in a white envelope and the dollar amount written on the outside. When we returned to the room we counted the money and discovered that two forty dollars had been taken. A couple of days prior to this we had returned from breakfast and were waiting in the hotel lobby when I decided to return to the room to retrieve something. The staff requires guests to leave the room key at the front desk, and when I asked for the key to get into our room the desk clerk became very nervous and said he would have to go with me to the room. He would not just give me the key but insisted on going with me to the room with a master key. On our ride up in the elevator he appeared to be so nervous that I became very uncomfortable and told him to just forget it, figuring that there had been some language miscommunication. I now believe that one of the staff had used our room key to enter the room and search for cash, and he was an accomplice. Some others in our group were staying in the same hotel, and one person had one of the desk clerks walk in on her when she had stayed behind in the room. She said they had tried to use the room safe but found that it did not work properly. Don't trust this hotel. Find another place to stay!

Very easy to get to from Gare du Nord, so that was a plus. However, the rooms needed a distinct bit of renovation. The wall coverings were scruffy, toilet door stuck on the floor, tiles missing, basin cracked, cobwebs... Not all I hoped it would be!!! I presumed it would be fine as it waqs booked in conjunction with Eurostar. I couldn't recommend it to a friend.

Old hotel in need of a face lift. The wall paper is in bad shape. The water pipes make noise. The windows do not close all the way so the noise from the street leaks into the room.
The room I was in was very small. The Front Desk staff was friendly. Constant problem with WiFi so don't count on it. I rated this Hotel "Average" considering the Price for Paris.
This hotel is in a good location, close to Metro and many shops/Restaurants.
I would recommend this hotel only if you do get a good deal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not facing the street to reduce street noise.

Don't expect the best service at this hotel however it is clean and in a good location. We asked for a twin room as I was sharing with my Mother and when we arrived the room was made up as a double. We went down at 2pm and they advised it would be fixed, when we returned later that night nothing had been done. When I spoke to reception they were very rude and made us feel like a bother.
Close to Metro station and plenty of restaurants for you to choose from.
Also no laundry facilities on service contrary to hotel description.

Prepaid for a Superior Room with a double-bed in advance.
The location is superb, the hotel can be reached with the RER B train right from the CDG airport. The entrance to the Denfert train station is about 100m from the hotel also provides access to the Metro lines that brings you directly to the Eiffel tour or Louvre/Notre Dame etc. One street away is a side street with nice cafes, wine&cheese shops, a Monoprix (cheap grocery store). Also, the Latin Quarter is within walking distance (the walk from the Louvre, through the Latin Quarter to the hotel was maybe a bit over an hour, but worth it).

So far so good. When we arrived in the evening we gotten a room, that was hardly bigger than the bed, with a tiny closet toilet and a separate shower 'closet'. The double bed was two singles pushed together, obviously they slid apart at night somewhat. The beds have old uncomfortable mattresses.
I talked to the front desk the next morning, and a younger guy told me they will arrange the beds so they don't slide apart. But told him I paid for a double bed, not for singles... he checked my reservation and we got a new much nicer/bigger room. The first room didn't feel right to begin with. So now in the new room, again... two singles pushed together, but the two single mattresses were overlying a big double mattresses so the beds did not slide apart too much, still there is always a crack and overall the bed was uncomfortable (my back didn't feel good); new room though (corner) had 2 big windows and a bathroom that can be described as such with a bath tub/shower + toilet. In talking to the younger guy again at the front desk, he said they only have singles, and for double occupancy they push them together... I didn't want to believe that and left it with that.

Didn't try the hotel breakfast which is 15euro. There is ample cafes to choose from down the streets that probably provide better value and is cheaper (never paid more than 10euros for breakfast, cafe+oj+croissant goes for as little as 5euro in places). The hotel lobby has a tee and coffee station, but they want 3euros for an espresso... rip off.
The Wi-Fi was terrible, it works on and off on the higher floors and commonly slow. It works somewhat ok in the hotel lobby. There is a McDonalds 2 min from the Hotel for proper WiFi and we found some of the cafes/restaurant provide WiFi as well.
Older hotel staff was commonly grumpy and rude. On the last night, maids didn't really do the beds, for whatever reason took the shampoos&soap but didn't replace...
Hotel interior looked nice, but probably seen better days.

Apart from the location, there wasn't too much that is recommendable. I don't mind small rooms and such, but this is definitely not a 4**** Hotel (poor service, uncomfortable single beds disguised as double beds, horrible WiFi). We still enjoyed Paris, as we didn't spend much time in the hotel anyway.

I booked and pre-paid for eurostar and 2 nights at Villa Montparnasse a few weeks in advance.

On arriving in Gare du Nord we took the RER to Denfert-Rochereau and walked to the hotel. We had arrived a couple of hours before check in time, and were told that we could leave our bags at reception and go out if we wished.

We wanted to freshen up before going sightseeing, so choose to roam around locally, have lunch and turn up back at 14:00. When we did the receptionist said that there was some problem with our room so they would have to transfer us to their sister hotel - the Villa Pantheon. I was a bit annoyed especially because we had trekked with the bags further out and passed Villa Pantheon on the train, and if we'd have been told this earlier, we could have gone straight to Cathédrale Notre Dame as it was just a walk away..

The receptionist said that he could only apologise as they were full to capacity and offered to call us a taxi and pay the taxi fare to Villa Pantheon. He also offered us an upgrade; not sure if that happened or it was communicated to VP as I had already booked and paid for the Superior double room.

In retrospect I feel Villa Pantheon had better kerb appeal, and common areas bar etc.

My Review of Villa Pantheon submitted separately.

In terms of cleanliness, staff and distance to main attractions in Paris, villa Montparnesse is definetely a good choice.
Bathroom and hotel decoration is ok compared to other 3 stars hotels in Paris, but I did not understand how did that hotel receive 4 stars since only 6 people can sit down at the lobby.
And wifi is not available at the 7th floor.
I could definetely advise this hotel, but do jot expect 4 star hotel :(
