A few years ago I stayed at this hotel's former sister property and loved it. On this trip, since I was alone, I wanted to try a different neighborhood and style. I was just as impressed with this hotel's style and service. The Saint James is a beautiful chateau in the heart of Paris's 16th arrondissement, a bit like New York's Upper East Side, very chic and extremely quiet. Just around the corner you will find the Port Dauphine metro stop on the 2 line and just beyond the metro you have access to the RER's C line from Av. Foch Station. Anyone who has visited Paris before knows how fantastic their public transportation is. I used both the RER and metro to see the sights. Don't be afraid to use the system, the new vending machines have an English option making the whole experience easier. Back to the hotel - Seeing the chateau as you arrive is just as impressive as the inside. It has all of the conveniences of the 21st century in a 18th century setting. I had a large and comfortable suite on the third floor, #411 facing the back garden, wonderfully decorated with soft greys and striking magenta tones. The bed was firm and the pillows were soft with extremely high end linens and towels. They serve a wonderful breakfast each morning in a gorgeous salon and if you are there in nice weather you can avail yourself of the outside garden. Don't miss out on the omelets. Service throughout the hotel was impeccable, concierge, bellman, front desk and the management. I arrived very early on Sunday and was greeted by Laure, the manager on duty. She gave me a description of the hotel and introduced me to the breakfast salon. She assured me once my room was vacated she would have it serviced immediately. This was no problem as you can't expect a room to be ready unless you are willing to pay for the night before. I went on a short walk down the avenue to visit the arc de triomphe. When I returned, Laure escorted me personally to the suite and asked if there was anything else she might do, a very nice touch! I also received great service from the Concierge, Christian who provided me with expert knowledge. He helped me with trips on the RER to visit Versailles and Auvers Sur Oise, the little picturesque town where Vincent van Gogh painted and died. This is a trip not to be missed as you can visit the inn were he lived and died. There is a fantastic museum and slide show depicting his time in Auvers, this little trip was the highlight of my stay. I was also at one time greeted by Nicolas who works in the Sales Department. He was the one who booked my reservation, he was very friendly and helped with suggestions on Parisian nightlife. Overall my seven night stay was flawless. This little hotel had all of the charm and comfort you could want. If you are deciding on where to stay in Paris, you can't go wrong with the Saint James, it is truly sublime.
