Saint James Paris - Relais et Chateaux
Ranked #17 of 1,804 Hotels in Paris
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 28, 2012

A few years ago I stayed at this hotel's former sister property and loved it. On this trip, since I was alone, I wanted to try a different neighborhood and style. I was just as impressed with this hotel's style and service. The Saint James is a beautiful chateau in the heart of Paris's 16th arrondissement, a bit like New York's Upper East Side, very chic and extremely quiet. Just around the corner you will find the Port Dauphine metro stop on the 2 line and just beyond the metro you have access to the RER's C line from Av. Foch Station. Anyone who has visited Paris before knows how fantastic their public transportation is. I used both the RER and metro to see the sights. Don't be afraid to use the system, the new vending machines have an English option making the whole experience easier. Back to the hotel - Seeing the chateau as you arrive is just as impressive as the inside. It has all of the conveniences of the 21st century in a 18th century setting. I had a large and comfortable suite on the third floor, #411 facing the back garden, wonderfully decorated with soft greys and striking magenta tones. The bed was firm and the pillows were soft with extremely high end linens and towels. They serve a wonderful breakfast each morning in a gorgeous salon and if you are there in nice weather you can avail yourself of the outside garden. Don't miss out on the omelets. Service throughout the hotel was impeccable, concierge, bellman, front desk and the management. I arrived very early on Sunday and was greeted by Laure, the manager on duty. She gave me a description of the hotel and introduced me to the breakfast salon. She assured me once my room was vacated she would have it serviced immediately. This was no problem as you can't expect a room to be ready unless you are willing to pay for the night before. I went on a short walk down the avenue to visit the arc de triomphe. When I returned, Laure escorted me personally to the suite and asked if there was anything else she might do, a very nice touch! I also received great service from the Concierge, Christian who provided me with expert knowledge. He helped me with trips on the RER to visit Versailles and Auvers Sur Oise, the little picturesque town where Vincent van Gogh painted and died. This is a trip not to be missed as you can visit the inn were he lived and died. There is a fantastic museum and slide show depicting his time in Auvers, this little trip was the highlight of my stay. I was also at one time greeted by Nicolas who works in the Sales Department. He was the one who booked my reservation, he was very friendly and helped with suggestions on Parisian nightlife. Overall my seven night stay was flawless. This little hotel had all of the charm and comfort you could want. If you are deciding on where to stay in Paris, you can't go wrong with the Saint James, it is truly sublime.

Room Tip: The front rooms have a view of the fountain.

We are looking forward to booking another trip as soon as possible to this exquisite chateau hotel.

Quite aside from the opulence of the decoration and the heavenly garden, we were particularly impressed by the masseuses for their superlative massages on the Saturday morning, Julien who organised a lovely birthday lunch for us at the Restaurant du Palais-Royal, and all the staff for their beautiful service (and for indulging our poor attempts to speak French).

The most wonderful thing was being upgraded on arrival to a suite, at no extra cost – we felt extremely special and fortunate, and admired this policy as a very clever piece of customer service!

If we had any suggestions, they would be: first, that it would have been good to be forewarned that the hotel restaurant does not serve its menu gastronomique in August (our meal was delicious but we had been hoping for a slightly more haute cuisine dinner in the hotel) and second, we returned to our room after the massages to find the cleaning had just begun, and we had to sit downstairs to wait for the maids to leave before we could shower and go out. But these were very small things, and we nonetheless had an exceptional stay.

We cannot wait to go back.

Room Tip: Suite 203 was absolutely exquisite, with an upstairs bedroom and bathroom, and space downstairs to e...

This hotel is located away from the maddening crowds and in a wonderful Paris neighborhood. Quiet, elegant and with friendly and accomodating service at every turn. I would rather stay here than at the George V! Excellent, excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Room 303 is large and comfortable.

The hotel is beautiful, wonderful service, the staff are very friendly , tailor made feelings, very private. defenitly recommend if you want to pamper yourself. Or a romantic gate away for couple. Unique in Paris. The location, you need taxi ride to go anywhere but a short taxi ride. Quite and up class residential area in center Paris. Stayed there couple of times, recommended to my friends , also booked as wedding gift for my cousin's honey moon in Paris, everyone loved their experiences . my favorite room : 308 ( or 306?) the one with two French windows, over looking the front fountain of the hotel. has a living room area and decorated in classical black & white. ( every room is different)

Our stay at the historic Hotel St.James was a bit of a mixed bag after recent wonderful experiences at hotels in London ( Knightsbridge Hotel ) and in Provence ( Crillon le Brave Hotel ). The location of the Saint James , it's beautiful historic architecture , quirky decor and novel rooms ( ours had a working baby grand piano in the seating area and our children's had a leapard skin carpeted spiral stair case from their seating area to their bedroom !) were all truly unique and very special . The library bar , garden restaurant and location of this classic ' Chateau ' in the heart of the city all made for a unique Parisian experience and for these reasons we have 'generously 'given the hotel a very good rating as it is certainly worth a visit , BUT, ...... If you are looking for a friendly hotel offering good service where you are made to feel welcome and special then beware , this is not the hotel for you ! We were left feeling that most of the staff were doing us a favour and were in fact quite irritated to be of service to us at all ! By way of example , when we arrived late afternoon and asked for a few clothes to be pressed for dinner , we were met with all sorts of reasons why this was not possible and only after politely standing my ground did the staff reluctantly agree to help ! Wanting a late start one morning we ordered a simple continental breakfast for two with tea and coffee and serials and juice for our kids . After almost an hour the food hadn't arrived ,we were all starving , showered and ready to go and so I called down again . When eventually the food did arrive , the order was wrong , there was no sugar , no cutlery etc etc . Two trips later when they got the order right , we were ready to leave and the whole point of breakfast in bed had been lost . Having had confirmation of late check out for one of our rooms from our travel agent ( for which we were required to pay a full days charge ) , having phoned reception to ask which of our suites we should vacate , an irritated lady confirmed they were totally full and they couldn't accommodate our late check out request ! She was fortunately wrong and after much irritation and having to call our travel agent , all was resolved but the unfriendly and unhelpful service were surprising in a luxury hotel of this calibre and marred an otherwise wonderful visit to this beautiful city .

Room Tip: Rooms 509 or 510 are very quirky suites , we found them novel and probably the best hotel rooms we...

Dear Sir,

I would like to thank you and your family for choosing the Saint James Paris. I am glad you liked our little chateau and suites 509-510, but am deeply concerned about your feedback regarding our quality of service and your feeling that some members of our staff lacked friendliness. We constantly focus on a personalized and caring service. It is certainly our best asset and has always been recognized as such by our guests so far. I am truly sorry you did not feel welcome during your stay in our Paris home. Should you do us the honour of staying with us again, please let me know in advance and I will make sure you experience the service and attention each of our guests deserves.

Sincerely,
Yves Monnin, General Manager

After losing luggage in Russia, the gates of the hotel were a welcome site. I immediately received an upgrade to a wonderful suite and the Concierge staff including Christian went out of their way to help not only the luggage but to arrange a limo tour of Paris and dinner for the first night. The room, the staff and yes the unusual design of the hotel were all a pleasant surprise. The location is a little out of the way if you do not know Paris but there is a Metro 1/3 mile away and one can easily walk to the Eiffel Tower area. Very quiet area which was also a nice bonus. We used the dining facility and the outdoor garden daily. Relais and Chateaux do not put their name on anything but the best and this qualifies. Cannot wait to return.

This property was a more than welcome escape from Hotel la Bellchasse!! To compare the two is like comparing apples and oranges...this is a full service luxury historic property that offers you a quiet retreat in the middle of Paris. The location is good, quite a nice area and walking distance from the Champs Elysee and other areas of interest. If you are looking to be in a funkier, more neighborhood-like area that is loaded with restaurants, I would recommend looking a little further. We did not mind taking taxies to and from the areas we wanted to visit, but some people might not want to do that and it did get a little expensive. However, if you are looking for a posh property to treat yourself with, this is a wonderful hotel! The library bar is just exquisite - deep wood paneling and loads of books! The outdoor garden area is also another wonderful area to have a drink - it felt just like being in the countryside. The staff was so helpful and welcoming, we truly appreciated that. The concierge team was always a step ahead of you. I cannot vouch for the food because we did not dine there during our visit, but the restaurant is quite beautiful - very 'classic Paris'. If you are looking for something lively, I might also suggest somewhere else. The room we had was a two story suite with a spiral staircase. This was PLENTY of space for the two of us and it was in perfect condition. All amenities are there; a safe, a mini-bar, hairdryer, etc. If it isn't in the room, they can no doubt bring it to you. Beds were comfortable and the rooms beyond well appointed. We did not have time to investigate the spa, but they do have one. I think this is perfect for a special occasion or a business travel. When you pull up to this property's circular drive, you will know you have 'arrived'!
