“Not what we expected”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

Hotel Saint Louis en l’Isle was a great disappointment. We arrived with another couple at 10:00 pm and were given the tiniest rooms in the hotel (303 and 403).The rooms were to have been superior double but were definitely not that. We had reserved the hotel shuttle to pick us up at the Gare Montparnasse hoping that the management would then be aware that we would be arriving late and would save the rooms we had requested. The bed had one foot of space between it and the walls on both sides, and two feet at the foot of the bed. There was a miniscule closet which had room for three or four items of clothing with a mini refrigerator beneath it. No dresser was provided, just a small shelf for the telephone and TV. At that late hour, we had no choice but to spend the night. Our reservation was for five nights and we certainly did not want to spend five nights at this hotel in that room.

In the morning, we found another hotel and told the manager in the lobby that we were checking out. He tried to tell us that we could not cancel because cancellation had to be 72 hours in advance! Then he called his boss to find out how to proceed while we went upstairs to get our luggage. When we went back to the lobby, the manager had locked the front door so that we could not leave! He told us his boss requested payment for the one night, the shuttle, and the breakfast. We had intended to pay for those services and could not understand why we were being “held captive”. After payment was made we were “permitted” to leave!

Upon arrival back in the U.S., we and our friends realized we had already prepaid the first night at the hotel six months earlier. We sent an email to the hotel explaining this, but received no reply. We then contacted our credit card company to dispute the charge and they were able to resolve this issue. It is too bad that this hotel did not handle our situation with more grace. Consequently, we felt compelled to write this negative report.
I would certainly NOT recommend this hotel for anyone with a different option.

Dear Docolo. We thank you for your report but if the hotel is not what you expected, your behavior was definitely not what a hotel would expect from a regular customer. There is nothing we can do about the size of our rooms and we can understand that it didn't meet your expectations. Some reviews mention that point on Tripadvisor, despite that point, we are the best rated and the less expensive hotel on the Island. Everybody can assume that in this type of situation, you would either ask for a larger room or tell the manager that you finally decided to leave our place for another hotel with larger rooms. As described in your comment, you had breakfast in the morning, left the hotel in order to find another hotel without mentioning your disappointment to the clerk at the desk. You finally came back at noon and went down in the lobby with your suitcases to tell the clerk that would leave the hotel. What you forgot to mention is that : 1/ When you booked your room, we mentioned twice in our booking and confirming processes that any stay that has begun is fully due – we never had to apply this rule and charged two nights only in your case. Let me remind you that you agreed and signed your credit cards for these two nights 2/ You let us know that you decided to leave after the check-out time 3/ You were about to leave without paying the extra-services provided by the hotel (shuttle and breakfast) – You canceled 8 nights (2x4 nights) that we couldn’t re-rent when we refused hundreds of reservations for these dates. I must admit that the clerk on duty is not familiar with this type of situation - he actually never had to face it - and he over-reacted but this is the first time we faced this behavior in 15 years in the hotel business. Best Regards. The owner

This is a true three star hotel very well priced.
The buffet breakfast was free the first day.
Free Wi-Fi
Staff very friendly always with a smile
Room was a reasonable size compared to European Standards standards.
Clean and located on a quiet street

Neighbouring rooms can be noisy especially when opening and closing doors with keys.

Its located near Notre Dame with metro stations are all around, very easy to reach.
Also you can catch one to get to CDG Airport for 9 euros each.
Many sights also available within 15 to 20 minutes walk along the river.

Many good restaurants on the hotel street for everybodies tastes.
Very good three star hotel.

Room Tip: Stair cases could be and issue for older clientel however there is an elevator.

Location is perfect, nice, and I cannot think to anything more "central" than this Hotel. Everyting is cozy and intimate, and the service is good and personal. But be prepared to the smaller room you probably visited, to the smaller hotel lift you probably used, and the smaller stairs you probably climbed. This hotel rooms are nice but small even for Paris (well known as the town with the smalles hotel rooms in the world)
This is probably not a big incovenience if you know it before, if you travel light and if you are not oversize.
(they also have suites, that probably are not so tiny. Ask definitely for one of them.)

Room Tip: Ask for the largest room they can offer.

First off, the location of this hotel was amazing. Staying on Isle Saint Louis was really nice because it wasn't packed full of tourist but getting to the highlights of Paris was pretty easy. Because it isn't so crowded, the noise level at night is really low, which is nice for such a big city. Notre Dame was just a short walking distance away. We ended up walking to the Louvre and Musee D'Orsay and enjoyed experiencing the walking along the banks of the Seine (only if you don't mind a long walk.) If a long walk isn't an option, it is easy to catch a taxi and there are metro stations that are close by.
The rooms were nice and the beds were really comfortable. The shower was nice and everything seemed up to date. They weren't the largest rooms, but I found that is to be expected in Paris. Everything was really clean.
The staff was extremely nice and helpful. For an extra 13 euros, you could eat breakfast there. The breakfast was pretty good and convenient. If you don't feel like paying the extra 13 euros, there are a couple of bakeries on the same street that you could get a pastry to go.
For the amount we paid, I felt that this hotel was a pretty good deal. I am definitely planning on staying there again the next time I am in Paris.

I have rested at three of the charming small hotels of The Isle Saint Louis for two decades, and the ease and grace of this small, tender corner hotel is treasured. Please note that these are fine, charming small inns, not opulent, trendy over the top places for the inflated ego. The location is on the main rue running down the center of the tiny island. Across the street stands a beloved boulangerie (bakery), fromagerie (cheese magasin), a beloved father and son wineshop, a beloved toyshop, with nice pharmacies a block East and a block West, the island post office a block East, two creperies directly across the street, one of my two Parisian florists a half block East, cafes, and numerous charming shops. The small island market is a half block away from the front door, for bottled water, fruit, and all small grocer's items. This is all within a five minute walk across the footbridge from Ile Saint Louis to the Ile de la Cite directly at the back garden of Notre Dame Cathedral. The hotel will arrange transport from and to airports and train gares, breakfast is the perfection of the old tradition of perfect baguettes and butter, jam, croissants, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, fruit salad, jus d'orange, and cafe, or chocolate, in the stone arched basement of the four hundred year old manse. Beds are good, rooms and baths small and charming, quiet, clean, cared for, yet in the midst of the beloved Ile Saint Louis Parisian neighborhood life. I have experienced peoples of the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa welcome and cared for on this island with tenderness and grace. Would love the hotel to add more opulent towels and sheets, and some more elegant French shampoos and savons for us romantic sentimentalists. The owners of the hotel are lovely, gracious, whimsical, kind, caring and at ease. Have a stay in their gentilesse. I am completely at home here. And grateful. Merci mille fois.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms sightly larger. The hotel is small and charming. A great tradition of Paris. Enjo...

My husband and I stayed at Saint-Louis en L’Isle for five nights at the start of October. We booked the largest double room on the top floor of the hotel – so glad we did as it was still quite small, but normal for Paris. We looked at a standard double as my parents want to stay here next year, really tiny and absolutely no room for luggage!

As is common in Paris the lift stops between floors, so you need to get your luggage up or down to your room. Up in our case as we were on the top floor. The room was quite nicely decorated with two French balconies, one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. This was really pleasant when we were having late afternoon wine in our room, sitting with the windows open and watching the life on the Rue Saint-Louis en L’Isle below us.

There were a few problems in the room, the airconditioner didn’t work, even though it wasn’t hot it was very stuffy and we wanted the fan to move air around. The front desk repaired it, it turned out that it had been turned off as the previous guests found it too noisy at night. The noise though appeared to be from a general airconditioner motor on the roof, as it was noisy whether our unit was on or off. Not great for light sleepers. There was minimal storage space in the room, a very narrow wardrobe that only allowed us to hang three or four items each, and a very shallow drawer in each bedside table. We found it easier to leave our luggage in our cases but when we are staying for five nights it would have been nice to unpack. There were no ironing facilities but you could go to down to the basement and use the iron there. It was impossible to stand upright in the shower. Admittedly I am fairly tall (175cm), but I either had to stoop uncomfortably or sit in the back and use the hand shower. Shorter people would not have had such a problem though.

The good point was the location which was sensational. We loved staying on the Ile Saint Louis. Apart from a dinner at Le Jules Verne we ate each evening on the island, or Ile de la Cite as there is a very large choice of restaurants. There was also a wine store, a fromagerie, a couple of boulangeries and a two pharmacies so we had everything we needed. It is only a five minute walk to Pont Marie metro station and a couple more to St Michel metro and RER. I believe two buses also service the island, but we simply walked everywhere. It is so quick and easy to get to the Marais or the Left Bank. This was our third trip to Paris and the best location by far.

The other great point was the complimentary wifi. Other Paris hotels we have stayed in have had this but it has never worked very well. The wifi at Saint-Louis en L’Isle was fantastic. It just worked, on our laptop, our tablet and our iphones, it worked perfectly and we never needed to remember passwords.

The staff were lovely and very helpful with booking restaurants and any other advice. We used the hotel shuttle from the airport and to Gare du Nord and could not fault that either. Probably slightly dearer than a taxi but much more convenient. We paid €65 for the airport transfer and €30 to the station.

We did not eat breakfast as the breakfast room was in the basement and we prefer to be able to people watch and see the surroundings. There are three or four breakfast places within a five minute walk, but our favourite by far was Cafe St Regis, which I have reviewed separately. Our favourite restaurant for dinner was Aux Anysetiers du Roy. I will also do a separate review of this.

All in all I would certainly stay at this hotel again, and have recommended it to my parents for next year.

Room Tip: Do not choose a standard room, there will no space at all. Top floor is the largest.

We stayed for 3 nights in November (note time of year, as Paris in summer is another matter) in a standard room at 169 euros per night- breakfast available at 13 euros each extra. So far, every time we have stayed in Paris ( about 8 occasions) we have chosen a different hotel and this is the first one we feel we could re-visit. St. Louis is one of the 2 islands in the Seine; it is close to Notre Dame and therefore convenient for most of the areas one would want to visit. \The rue St. Louis is a long one, full of mixed shops/restaurants/private apartments and nicely busy but not too noisy at night; however, b etween 6-8 a.m. , yes a..m.!!, there is a continuous series of noise, street-cleaners and delivery lorries, which sound loud as it is a narrow street. This cannot be helped and if the window is closed, it does make quite a difference.
Our room was very small, but we expect this as so many of the Paris hotels are in old buildings which are inconvenient but charming. There were several old beams and prints etc. on the walls; we also had a tea/coffee tray, which was replenished daily. The bedlinen was also changed daily; there was a fridge and safe in the wardrobe. The shower-room was tiny but all mod.cons. were there and there was a double, powerful shower.
Nice if small reception and the usual tiny lift, which only went to the 2nd, level, so we had to carry our cases up to our 3rd. floor room. We checked out the basement where the breakfast was served- clean and whitewashed and also the wifi was there. The staff were all helpful and pleasant- a special mention for Denis!! On our first evening, some musicians slowly came along the street playing their instruments and one looked up at where I was leaning over the tiny balcony of our room. They were such a happy crowd that I got a 5 euro note and threw it down to them....stupid really, as a slight breeze wafted it on to the first floor windowsill room below. They looked so disappointed that I then threw some euro coins down but they were wanting the note. I ran downstairs and told Denis, on duty at reception and, bless him, he got the key of the room and found and handed over the note to the musicians, with many laughs- though he DID say he'd heard enough of their music. It was one of those moments - the narrow street, the music, the balcony and a pleasant Frenchhman- which is special to Paris.
Actually, we didn't eat breakfast in the hotel, thhough we meant to do so but we found the St. Regis brasserie at the end of the street and ate there each morning.- amazing interior, good service and...hot drink, fresh o.j., toast, croissant, boiled egg, butter and 2 jams, only 11 euros each..a snip for a great area in a capital city. The Batobus stop for on/off river trips, thoroughly recommended, is about 10 minutes walk away. In autumn/winter, try to return on it in the evening, to see the lights and try and peer into the apartments......

Room Tip: It's worth paying for a superior room, as some other residents told us they were larger, though...
