Owner description: A beautiful church built by Napoleon in honor of his troops.

....and the Madeleine or Magdalena church is one of those surprises with its 64 huge columns. You might think you're in Athens seeing this colossal, attractive piece of architectural artwork.

This is a very different kind of church in that it has no windows on the walls only in the roof. It looks rather drab from the outside but very imposing with its Corinthian columns. The inside is where the beauty lies. It has grand marble columns and a splendid dome. It is very tranquil and restful and certainly has the feeling a church should have. The information sheets by the entrance are helpful in giving yourself a guided tour. Hard to believe this haven is in the centre of Paris and free - A must see!

Very interesting site to visit and explore the undergrounds, best in the afternoon to get the most of it with less people around.

This is not your typical Gothic church in Paris, started in 1764 but not completed until 1841, the church is modeled on a Greek temple. Staggering in size with superb workmanship, the church is beautiful with excellent statues including the altar backdrop. This was a nice change from the typical Paris Gothic churches. It is not hard to imagine what an ancient Greek temple looked like with this as an example.

Attended a performance of Mozart's Requiem, with a choir of 55, 4 soloists and a 12 piece chamber orchestra and for €30 a seat, was disappointed. We were seated about halfway back and the sound was terrible, the music overpowered the soprano and a long reverberation time made the whole sound quite muddy. Also, some of the musicians were not up to the level one would have expected for the money.

However, it is a beautiful building and quite different at night, with stage lighting, from it's somewhat drab appearance by daylight. There is some sort of performance two or three times a week in peak season, it is definitely an experience worth doing but get there early and take a seat close to the front if you can. Saint Chapelle is my preferred option, much better sound and a more historical building.
