Other than Notre Dame, this is my favourite church in Paris. It's just so unexpected to see what looks like a greek temple in the middle of Paris. Sitting on the front steps you have an amazing view all the way down a wide boulevard to the French National Assembly, built in the same style so that the two buildings reflect each other. An amazing church lies inside too, although somewhat dark. The Madeleine is surrounded by very expensive food shops - Fauchon's is a must (you can get one slice of foie gras for 10-15 euros) and there has been a flower market on the street beside the church forever. A great spot to stop and rest after a hectic morning or afternoon!
