Owner description: A beautiful church built by Napoleon in honor of his troops.
Reviewed August 24, 2012

Other than Notre Dame, this is my favourite church in Paris. It's just so unexpected to see what looks like a greek temple in the middle of Paris. Sitting on the front steps you have an amazing view all the way down a wide boulevard to the French National Assembly, built in the same style so that the two buildings reflect each other. An amazing church lies inside too, although somewhat dark. The Madeleine is surrounded by very expensive food shops - Fauchon's is a must (you can get one slice of foie gras for 10-15 euros) and there has been a flower market on the street beside the church forever. A great spot to stop and rest after a hectic morning or afternoon!

Had the chance to walk around and visit several gourmand shops. The church stands in the middle of the Place. Impressive structure, and had the chance to listen to a live classical concert inside, it was great. Very close to Place de la Concorde. Also around that area you can find many restaurants. I would highly recommend Chez Flottes. Great area to walk around.

40 years ago I used to hang out here with a friend (now dead) as teenagers. We used to come over by ferry then hitch to Paris with almost no money. We slept in the park near the Madeleine in cardboard boxes left outside shops at night. The police used to wake us kindly in the morning with a tap of a truncheon on the box. People were kind. We lived on bread cheese & wine, with money earned from selling secondhand books and cheap cigarette lighters on the street. We usually ate on the steps of The Madeleine and even business people would often stop for a chat. The sun always seemed to shine and the street women in nearby Pigalle used to stroke your hand while you chatted to them. These were days of a greater age but the atmosphere still just about survives.

We stayed near Place de la Madelaine for 3 nights. The Church is beautiful and has a marvelous view from the top of steps down through Place de Concorde and beyond. The are has tons of great gourmet stores and fine wine/whiskey specialty shops. Pricey for cafes and restaurants and very very busy with traffic and pedestrians.

Free to get in and when we arrived there was a concert rehearsal going on - which we sat and watched for free. Beautiful church.
