“FANTASTIC - make sure you visit!!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

A haven for foodies and local French markets full of French people including chefs buying fresh produce for their restaurants. Youbwill find the oldest bakery in France and a wonderful cheese shop with a cow on the roof -- love it and crazy place!!

“Delicious food!”
Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

We stayed just up the road from this street and popped down most days to grab some breakfast or dinner. There are lots of delicious French bakeries and cafes at reasonable prices. There's also a fresh food market at the bottom of the street. If you're staying close to rue montorgueil you should definitely check it out!

“a shelter a few bullets away from Les Halles”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

It's your first visit to les Halles and you lament that it's all gone and under massive re something (construction? Modelling ? no one knows for sure what will come after the demoltion has finished).
Don't shed no tear. It is ugly, it was worse. And what is planned looks appaling so run away and enjoy all that there is to go around that pit. Southern part with Rue St Honoré going all the way to Louvre in just lovely but don't miss Rue de Montorgueil (Mountain of pride if you ask for translation). It's north of the pit, easy to find as Eglise Sainte Eustache is the gate to the street.
Way back when I was young Rue de Montorgueil was the back office of 'les halles' the wholesale food market of Paris. Activity was brisk from 02:00 in the morning and I remember bars in the street opening from midnight to noon. The Street hence was bustling with bars, food stalls, utensils shops. Most of that is gone but it's still a great walk up to Sentier station and to nearby streets ( Reaumur, Greneta, Aboukir...), it's really old Paris, fine pastry shops, vintage clothes, firemen jogging, well worth sitting down at a terrace ( the street is, a rarity in Paris, sort of pedestrian) so on a sunny morning, when the market is on, it is a bliss for the eye ! Enjoy.
