“Business hotel but be advised that it is not in the city center”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2011

The main reason we booked the Marriott Rive Gauche on a recent trip to Paris was because we were able to use Marriott points for a free weekend stay (30,000 points/night). Here are the key aspects of our visit:

1. Location: The Marriott Rive Gauche is admittedly a bit far from the center of Paris however it was easy enough to get to via the "B" RER line at stop "Denfert Rochereau". (This is also the train line that goes out to Paris' CDG Airport). Anyways, the hotel was an easy 10 downhill walk from the RER station. There was also a Metro stop nearby which we ended up not using due to renting the city's bikes (great fun, the way!).
2. Room: We were given a room with a king sized bed on the 17th floor that looked out over all of Paris. It was clean, well equipped and actually very similar to other Marriotts. There was a mini-bar that was thankfully half empty so we were easibly able to store a few drinks and perishables. We also had free Wifi due to my husband's Elite status- I am not sure how much it is per day. We also had access to the Executive Lounge but as they don't serve food or beverages on the weekend, we didn't go.
3. Food: We ordered coffee and croissants from room service one morning as a splurge and I have to say, it wasn't worth it. The coffee was poor quality (definitely not the wonderful strong French coffee that we'd had all during our trip through France) and it was pretty clear that the croissants had come from a plastic bag. Coffee and croissants along with a few semi-stale hard rolls cost a total of 28 euros! Note to self- next time, go to a cafe for breakfast.
4. Atmosphere: The hotel was a busy hub that predominantly catered to conventioneers and off duty flight attendants who fly in/out of the nearby Orly Airport.
5. Fitness: There was a decent sized fitness facility with cardio machines on the first floor, overlooking the Blvd St Jacques.

I am a faithful Rewards member, but I found the hotel lacking a bit. Rooms were pretty modern, clean, and the hotel had the good features you come to expect from a Marriott. It's better for business travelers. I personally didn't like the location as I felt distanced and the neighborhood is lacking. To be fair, my daughter liked the hotel better than I did. The staff was pretty nice, but the Concierge gave us tired and touristy recommendations for dinner. We asked for a recommendation for a local restaurant NOT so frequented by travelers (and he clearly understood us) and when we arrived, we found it full of Marriott guests, referred by this concierge.

We stayed for 3 nights and found the traveling a bit tedious as we needed to use buses due to my knee problem. Our main complaint was that the bed was too soft.

However, the breakfast was outstanding as to variety for a 4* hotel. Abdul, the chef, could not have been more acommodating. He greeted every guest as they arrived for breakfast and asked for follow up as to the quality and need for special dishes.

The concierges were also exceptional in the time they took to map out bus routing and recommend restaurants.

These positives outweighed the earlier stated negatives. In addition, the rate paid was quite low compared to other hotels.

For us, though, we will book closer in next visit. Should you be able to use the metro, give it a shot!

Room Tip: Ask for a river view

I stayed in this Marriott in late May, 2011, because a conference took place there. It exceeded expectations. For about EU 200 ($284) I got a clean, well-maintained room (1556) on a high floor with a great view. Front desk staff was courteous and efficient and was able to provide early check-in, a godsend after an overnight flight from Boston. Laundry service was better than average. Concierge service was excellent. Philippe knew just the dinner place to recommend, he made the reservation and he encouraged me to walk - a good suggestion. Conference center was pleasant and efficient with lots of fresh fruit to go along with French pastry as nibbles. Very welcome. Elevators a bit slow at times - one appeared to be down for maintenance. Other reviews knocked the hotel for location and certainly it was not in a special neighborhood. But proximity to RER (a way better bet from CDG airport than a pricey taxi stuck in traffic) and a few local cafes made up for the lack of ambience in the immediate area. Very fine stay, happy to recommend them.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

We decided on this hotel/area as it's not too far out of town but you don't have to pay a fortune to get an upmarket hotel.

I was very pleased upon arrival seeing the lobby and bar/cafe area. All very nicely decorated and quite luxurious. Check in was easy and quick.

Our room was great, not huge but fairly sized, lovely comfortable big bed, flat screen tv etc. Bathroom also fine. Not 5* but clean and modern.

Breakfast was very very nice, huge choice and all good quality as well as a fresh egg station and the usual stuff.

The location of the hotel is in a residential area and is very quiet, however you have two metro stations very very close to the hotel, and a larger one 5 - 10 mins away with more connections; and a little supermarket if you needed it.

We did not have any issues with transport and could be in any of the areas we wanted to visit within 10 - 20 minutes on the metro. We didn't have the need to get a taxi once.

Overall we were extremeley pleased with our choice of hotel and with the value for money also. Highly recommended.

Unlike other Marriotts, here I was offered to pay for an upgrade to Executive status, which is generally reserved only for Gold/Platinum Marriott members (at the time I was Silver). The upgrade is worth the cost. The staff were all incredibly pleasant and patient. I stayed here during the demonstrations back in October, so the hotel took measures to notify us (see my attached photo). The hotel is near a grocery store and is a short walk from a metro stop and a yummy bakery. Although it's in the 14th arrondissement it's very easy to get around at a low cost.

We stayed at River Gauche Marriot using our Marriot Rewards. We were upgraded with free internet, access to the business lounge and breakfast due to my husbands Marriot Gold Card . It is as comfortable as other Marriot Hotels. One thing I like about Marriot is the bed and the pillows.

A tip to getting here. From CDG airport, take RER B at either Terminal 2C,D,E or F and get off at Denfert Rochereau stop/ Once you exit from station just turn right along St Jacques Blvd. It is about 15 min walk. Make sure you carry coins with you to buy your first RER ticket into paris (Euros 8.7) otherwise you have to queue up at the counter/booth if u want to use your credit cards.
