What a dump, wrapped in classic turn of the century lovely stone faced exterior architecture. Oh that the inside was so fine. A good and busy location. Mediocre concierge desk. Poorly managed overpriced breakfast room with food items ill located. Our fourth floor room was large but shabby; and the bathroom, done in dull grey, looked as if it had fifty layers of peeling paint. Very old, not collectible, furniture. Slow wifi. Not worth the price. But 5 stars for architecture.

We stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Lutetia in Paris. The location is excellent and very convenient, near to St Germain and all the left bank sights..metro right on the corner..A "hotel de grand standing" unfortunately doesnt live to expectations:for a superior room ,we were given a very shabby 2nd floor room, with a window on top of the kitchens - all the kitchen smells entered the room when one opened the window-..peeling wallpaint, non replenished mini bar, shabby bathroom could be better cleaned..sending the newspapers deposited at the conscierge at 11 am morning to the room at 11pm..in short, this "dignified old Parisian lady " could do with renovation and some training for the staff...I shared complaints with the front desk during check out...they were very courteous.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor and renovated rooms

I love the Lutetia -- it is not perfect -- run down at some places, but you have this special atmosphere. I just stayed to the Mandarin Oriental in London for example -- yes the bells and whistle are of higher standard at the Mandarin. But the Lutetia has much more of a soul. The place may be run down for example but the atmosphere is something else than the flashy international of its counterparts.

I and the family lived just down the road from the Lutetia for 5 years (1999-2003) and often dined at the Brasserie - which we liked a lot. On this trip, with wife, daughter and her boy-friend, we decided to treat ourselves and spend more than we usually do in Paris for 'superior' rooms and breakfast as well. We were all very pleased indeed by the experience and rather puzzled by the negative comments from other visitors. We were impressed by the friendly and professional staff we met at reception, the breakfast room, the concierge service (baggage storage) and especially the big smiles at the no-fuss check-out. (But not in the bar - see below.) Our rooms both overlooked (different) courtyards, but a good distance from other buildings and much bigger than any other hotels rooms we have found in Paris (during many years of visits). Our room (365) was 13 by 17 feet, plus a decent sized bathroom. Daughter and her boy-friend had an even bigger room (334) with a bathroom at least twice as big as ours and two wardrobes. Both rooms looked in excellent condition and the beds were big and very comfortable. We all had restful and quiet nights. Having BBC1 and 2 live on the TV was a very pleasant surprise and the breakfast was also good - maybe not entirely to American taste (bacon rather less crisp that in an US hotel) but with a selection of 4 strengths of self-service Nespresso coffee (plus standard coffee brought to the table in a flask) and an amazing 9 (yes 9!) varieties of milk (mainly 'bio' milk), 4 types of bottled water and we think about 20 varieties of bread products - plus polite, helpful and unobtrusive staff who produced an enormous and modern high chair for the family next to us. The only down-side was the price of drinks in the bar - and the service there, which wasn't up to the standard we experienced elsewhere in the hotel.

Room Tip: 334 is very big - though with only a courtyard view.

We are currently staying at the Hotel Lutetia (unfortunately prepaid for a week). This is a hotel in delapidated condition - the owners show no sense of pride. When we checked in, we were immediately asked if we wanted to pay 50 euro more for a deluxe room. Immediately, I was unimpressed with any front desk clerk that tries to upsell you on a room. Finally, we were given one of their "refurbished" rooms. Mind you, a refurbished room means it has a flat panel TV and perhaps a nicer bed. The other portions of a refurbished room include a severely cracked old tile floor, paint that is peeled off the wall in the bathroom, and generally a room in desperate need of some remodeling. As I'm writing this review, an ant just crawled across the bed. When I spoke to the front desk clerk and the manager, both were equally nice and completely ineffectual. Remind you, I am a frequent business traveler who stays in hotels all over the world. None of the hotels (100 years plus) in which I have stayed are in such deplorable condition. The "Quality Manager" felt peeling paint, etc. should be acceptable since the property is old. I'm sorry but when owners defer maintenance to the point where the hotel is falling apart, you are witnessing a business that prefers to earn a higher profit from its customers by deferring maintenance than by taking care of its property and its guests. Luckily, we love Paris and will be back, but certainly to a different hotel.

The Lutetia wins on it's location in the heart of St. Germain in the 6th arrondisement. It is a 2 minute walk from Le Bon Marche and close to the many boutiques of St. Germain. The room sizes are larger compared to most hotels in the area so value for money for the rooms is the best in the vicinity. The style of the rooms and the hotel in general is French classic. The rooms and hotel in general are quite tired looking and are in need of an update. The amenities are basic. Service is comme si comme sa ("so so" in French). I would still chose to stay here compared to the other hotels just on it's location and room size. Rooms in Paris in general are much smaller and much more expensive that the rest of the world.

Room Tip: The suite is spacious. The elevators are slow so a lower flow is better.
