Hotel Lutetia
Ranked #1,103 of 1,802 Hotels in Paris
Reviewed September 28, 2012

The Lutetia is in a great location, has the style and structure to impress but is sadly Let down by small details. Firstly, why is it good? Well, it is well-placed in Saint Germain, close to Montparnasse and just a short walk from some wonderful parts of Paris. There is a metro station right outside. It is an elegant building with elegant interiors. The public rooms are glamorous. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel's Brasserie is an excellent place to enjoy good food either for business or with friends in typically stylish Parisienne surroundings. So what let's it down? Well, the rooms are a disappointment. Although refurbishment is under way it is far from complete and the un-modernised rooms are a bit tatty, they are definitely small and the bathrooms just simply do not stack up for the price! Nothing in Paris is cheap, but Being there for the bi-annual Motor Show gives hoteliers the opportunity to hike the prices and basically deliver shoddy product because of the competition for rooms. But credit where it is due - the wifi was pretty good and free"

We stayed in a Junior Suite at the Lutetia for 6 nights in September 2012. We are frequent visitors to Paris and have stayed in many of the better known right bank hotels, and several of the smaller "hotels de charme." For this trip, we wanted to be in the 6th or 7th and decided to try the Lutetia. We had a reasonably pleasant stay, but my main thought about the Lutetia is how good a hotel it could be if it had better management. It is a good physical property in an excellent Paris location, but it just misses in a number of ways.
First the positives: Our room was really very nice. We had booked a junior suite and were originally given a high floor garret facing the courtyard. After asking for a room facing the front of the hotel, we eventually were given a really nice 3rd floor suite with high ceilings, large windows and a balcony looking onto Bvd Raspail, Rue de Sevres and the Eiffel tower in the distance. It was the kind of room where you really felt like you were in a nice Parisian apartment. The other major positive of the hotel is the location, on the border of the 6th and 7th arrondissements, which for us is the liveliest part of Paris. The gym is small but functional and about as good as you will get in Paris outside the really top hotels.
The disappointments relate mainly to the service and the public rooms.
First the service... it is not bad service, but it is just very cold and perfunctory. If you ask for something, it seems to get done. But you walk into the hotel and the doormen don't look at you or say good morning. Standing at the front desk is like standing at your bank branch... no warmth, just a business transaction.
But the major disappointment is the public rooms. The lounge is a grotesque ill-lit room that is set up like an airport waiting room. At cocktail hours there is frequently a loud and not very professional combo playing some form of "jazz". It would defy logic why anyone would sit there for a drink, when there are so many wonderful bars and brasseries in the neighborhood. The breakfast buffet is set up in a room off the main, badly lit hall. The food is very acceptable and the buffet would compare well with many in Paris. However the room is jammed full of tables and at 9am it is more of a food fight than a breakfast. Not a pleasant experience.
Would we stay there again? Maybe, because the location really works for us. However we would probably go to the Montalembert, or to one of the smaller hotels in the area... the St. Simon or the Recamier. The Lutetia is a bit frustrating, because you always have a sense that with a bit of effort it could be top class. Instead they seem to be content to cater to group travel and just move people through.

We chose Lutetia for its 4 star rating and location. We enjoyed the quietness of the courtyard side ,though would have preferred a view-they did not budge when requested a room with view(hotel was NOT fully booked). The standard room was VERY basic no thrills but had a very comfortable bed. The bath robe and slippers were a nice touch, breakfast was also a treat. Not a 4 star in american standards but definitely a very nice hotel and the staff was professional.

It was a lovely stay with the exception of the shower. I think ccw's review before me stated the problem well. Water goes absolutely everywhere. The plastic partition that is supposed to keep water from spraying on the floor is old and nonfunctional, so I used up the nice fluffy white towels soaking up the floor so I did not slip and fall. When I complained, there was just a shrug. Other than this inconvenience the hotel is spacious and grand and the breakfasts are amazing.

We stayed at the Lutetia on our honeymoon and recently returned to celebrate our anniversary. We advised on our reservation form that we were celebrating an anniversary and wine and chocolates were sent to our room after check in. A nice touch!

We had a room on the 5th floor with an outstanding view of the Eiffel Tower. The staff was very attentive and courteous. Special thanks to the front desk staff.

Room cleanliness was good. Room was a bit dated, but the great view made up for that. Breakfast was great. Huge selection, English, French, American. We also like walking across the street to the cafe on Blvd. Sevres for petit dejeuner.

We look forward to returning to celebrate our next big anniversary.

I just stayed in the Lutetia and the reason I chose it was some reviews mentioning how great the renovated rooms were, and the strides the hotel is making in recapturing its golden era. Alas, when I entered, first thing I realized was that the lobby looked outdated and gloomy. Incoming/outgoing guests were struggling to get their luggage through the revolving door. Of course my room was not ready when I tried to check in at 2pm, I was tartly reminded that check-in was at 3pm.

I was supposed to be in a "renovated" luxury room, and unfortunately, my definition of "renovation" differs from the hotel. The paint is already peeling in some areas, and the lights did not quite work and had to call front desk. The shower door did not close properly which led to leaks.

On the positive side, the room was quite spacious and the hotel amenities were nice. Breakfast, included in my deal was quite nice and served in a nice area with multiple stations featuring pastries, warm varieties and assortments. The location of the hotel cannot be beat in the heart of St. Germaines.

Room Tip: You must stay in "renovated" rooms. My understanding is the non-renovated are not up to p...

This place stretched my budget, but was highly recommended to me. I'm glad I took the recommendation--I thought it was worth it. The room was surprisingly spacious, especially by Paris standards. We were comfortable with three people and three beds in one room(staff had included an extra(third) bed per our request). We had a channel in English on the TV--unexpected and pleasant surprise. Our reservation included the breakfast buffet--I thought the selection of delectable baked goods was fabulous. Greatly enjoyed browsing at the nearby Bon Marche and its gourmet food section. Our room was on floor 2 and was quiet. Not high enough to have a view of the Eiffel Tower, I regret to say. Saint Germain neighborhood is great; we enjoyed walking to the Louvre, Notre Dame, Luxembourg Gardens--maybe about a 30 minutes walk away.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the Eiffel Tower, you will have to be higher than floor 2.
