“So near, so near but so sad and slipping”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

We have stayed at the St. James and Albany four or five times and I have reviewed it before. It has so many positive elements but still cannot hold it together and is making little progress.

The location on the Rue de Rivoli is first class. The check-in is efficient and polite. The public rooms are magnificent, the courtyards beautiful, the spa is outstanding, the bar is pleasant - though perhaps a little dull. However, the bed rooms and suites are rather sterile and dull. Where are the pictures and elements that make a hotel special. The bathrooms are luxurious but cramped. Staff do not brief guests properly on their rooms - the light controls, the windows, security etc. The food is worse than negligible and not good value.

This could be one of Paris' great hotels. It isn't and sadly, we will not be back again.

Room Tip: Lower floor rooms and junior suites overlooking the court yards are best. Get the staff to explain...

As the hotel is close to my offices, I stay there regularly (booked by my travel agency). And this time, I have to admit that it's getting really worse.
This hotel has never been good but I am really disappointed by the room I got: it's not 4 stars for sure. It is old, poor quality. I've stayed in 2 stars hotels that were really much better.
I find it really sad as the location and the building have a huge potential but really, I would not recommend to stay here if you're looking for a good Parisian experience. And I will ask my travel agency not to book me here anymore.

This hotel has a great location in beautiful Paris. Although my room was somewhat old, the location made me forget about it. The shower was not very clean (some mold) and towels were definitely old.
Location is absolutely amazing - exactly in front of Tuileries metro station, walking distance from Musée du Louvre and Place de la Concorde.

First time to Paris - hotel is in an excellent location, we were able to walk to most of the main attractions with a 9 year old (30 mins to Eiffel tower,10 mins to Lourve museum).
Hotel has a lovely bright reception area but nothing in the way of tourist information, we could of done with a few attraction leaflets for opening times etc (none provided in rooms either) - we were however given a map when we checked in. Be warned on arrival you are charged 50 euros a night as a guarantee for the mini bar etc - we were not made aware of this prior to arrival! Room was fine, bed was comfortable, furniture was very dated and carpets were very stained but bathroom areas (toilet was in a separate room) were very clean - could of done with tea/coffee making facilities!
I wouldn't recommend the food at the hotel - very overpriced and limited choice. We had breakfast included with our room which was ok but would not have paid for it separately, we did eat in the hotel on the first night but only because we were all so tired and reception gave us a 20% off voucher when we arrived, children are not catered for so we ordered a hamburger and asked for it well done - it came raw so my daughter wouldn't eat it!
Pool area was ok but freezing cold - we didn't use the spa, also children are only allowed in the pool after 4pm! They do not provide towels for the pool but you are given a robe and slippers to use instead.
Staff were mostly friendly even though a lot of them don't speak any English. The only trouble we encountered was with housekeeping - we had been out sightseeing early one morning and having walked everywhere by lunchtime our legs were aching and our daughter was tired, also the battery had died in the camera, so we decided to head back to the hotel for a rest and recharge the camera - the first housekeeping lady let herself into the room while we were there and I asked her to come back later - she said ok, 10 mins later she let herself in again - again she was asked to come back later, then they rang the room phone asking if we wanted the room cleaned today - I replied yes but in about an hour once we had gone back out, again 10 mins later they let themselves back in but we turned them away, we could hear them stood outside the door as if waiting for us to leave when the phone rang again demanding to know what time we were going out! My daughter had been trying to sleep for an hour before we headed back out but had no chance so we were not happy.
As a last note food and drink in the hotel is very overpriced - don't touch the mini bar 6 euro 50 for a bottle of water - and double check your bill, hotel tried to charge us for 2 bottles of water we had not touched but thankfully the receptionists sorted this out with no fuss.

We recently added this splendid hotel to Spyns 2014 Tour de France trips. Before working with a new hotel, I read the various online reviews and personally stay at a property. I spent the Valentine's weekend at the Saint James. Starting with the positives, first comment: the location is tops. Centrally-located in Paris's swank 1st arrondissement, the hotel is across the street from Tuilieries metro stop (yellow line), just a few blocks from the Louvre, and a 10-minute stroll from the Seine and Champs Elysees. The hotel entrance is on the Rue de Rivoli which is an endless stretch of cheap souvenir shops but walk a block north and you're in another world of embassies, chic boutiques, and intimate bistros. Second comment: there are two types of rooms at this hotel: renovated (like my room) and non-renovated. I believe this explains the wide range of reviews on this site so I'd recommend you specify you'd like a renovated room. You should also try to check in earlier, around 1:30-2:00 p.m. to ensure you get your renovated room. My room was large, comfortable, and a real bargain for downtown Paris. The bathroom had rather bland 90s-style marble, but it was impeccably clean with shower + bath. It als had plenty of hot water, soft towels, and terrific water pressure. I also had a walk-in closet (a luxury in Paris!) and courtyard view. Third comment: I found the hotel staff and concierge excellent. Check in was quick and efficient. When testing a hotel, I make a point of showing up early and asking for a different room. Both issues were handled politely and efficiently. Forth comment: I enjoyed both the spa and swimming pool. True the pool isn't heated 'Vegas-style' meaning 35 degrees celcius (90 Fahrenheit), but having a swim in downtown Paris was such a novelty I loved my refreshing dip. There are a few "needs improvement" comments. The breakfast was hearty however the breakfast eggs weren't quite farm-fresh and getting your morning juice from a University-dorm-style drinks dispenser wasn't very four-star; two things the hotel can easily improve. Second, the furniture in my room was a bit worn as was the carpet. (The bed was incredibly comfortable as were the pillows.) But given the reasonable price and terrific location, I was more than happy to overlook both problems. We're thrilled to be working with the Saint James for the 2014 Tour de France.

Room Tip: Request one of the renovated rooms.

The hotel is in an excellent location within walking distance of main attractions. The bedrooms were a bit on the small side but were fine for the amount of time we spent in them. We thought the breakfast was a bit expensive at 22 euros each so we didn't have any, preferring to eat out instead. We didn't rate the pool and spa area; the pool was so cold very few managed more than a length before they got out. We went to sit in the relaxation area and after a few minutes were told to leave by a member of staff as it was out of bounds unless we had paid for a treatment. We were actually discussing what treatment we might go for when we were ambushed and told to leave, so obviously we decided not to bother. All the other staff were very friendly and polite. I would stay in this hotel again but avoid the Spa

One of the few hotels in Paris with a pool in possibly the best location for museums -it should be a legend. Rooms on the cheap seventh floor have bathrooms like my mum's house in the '90s, and no coffee making facilities for our Euro 300 night. Not up to IHG group Crowne Plaza grade, let alone The Intercontinental Grand at Opera where I used to stay.
