“Nice little hotel, excellent value, good location”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

I spent 6 nights here and it was a very enjoyable stay. I would definitely come back here again. The double room is small but it is quite comfortable. The size reminded me of a hotel I stayed at in Tokyo. The bed is nice and firm, which I love. The bathroom is small but functional. Everything is super clean and very well maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful - I liked the German gentleman who works at night the best. Coffee from the hotel was great in the morning. Much better than the Starbucks down the street. The price represents an incredible value in Paris where most places cost about twice as much. The neighborhood around the hotel is great. Very Parisian and not touristy at all. We enjoyed eating in the area and walking up Rue Mouffetard a lot and checking out all the little stores and shops.

Room Tip: Choose a tripe room if you require additional space.

Stayed here on recommendation of son's french girlfriend's parents, they have used it many times when visiting Paris. Really they are right, it's in an excellent location, a short walk from the metro (Censier Daubenton on 7) and from lively Rue Mouffetard where there are loads of bistros and little shops. The hotel is smallish with no bar or restaurant, a plentiful continental breakfast is extra at 9 euros. The rooms are small but comfortable with a decent mattress on the bed, we paid 95 euros for a double with bath, you can have one with a shower only for 85 euros. The hotel would have been considered stylish and with quality decor/fittings in the early eighties perhaps but the decor does now look dated. This was of little consequence to us personally however as it was very clean and comfortable and we loved the location. Our room was at the rear and not noisy at all. TV with french channels plus BBC world news, ice machine in lobby, mini shampoos and soap, hairdryer in case you need to know. Other than that no frills but comfy enough, with a sofa in the room. As is typical in France no kettle, we of course took one for morning tea!

Can recommend the Cave de Bourgogne bistro in nearby square (at bottom of Rue Mouffetard) for busy local atmosphere and simple but decent 'hearty' food at a sensible price. Also the Pain aux Raisins from the boulangerie on the corner of Rue Pascal (as you walk to Metro) and the Fromagier Androuet for fabulous cheese. There are lots of cafes food shops and daily fruit and veg market so you can buy bits and bobs as well as eat out.

Very helpful girl at reception by day, Monsieur and night guy were less chatty but perfectly helpful when asked for anything.

All in all I would choose it again on any further trip to Paris!

Room Tip: I think the ones with bath are a little larger, the street is only a side street but if you are both...

Following 8 days in Burgundy, see other reviews, ewe tgv'd from dijon to Paris, took bus 91 from the gare de ylyon to Blvd POPort Royal/Gobelins and walked 3 blocks to this Latin Quarter hotel where we had stayed during our l2011 Paris /Normandy trip. Our 6th floor twin room ensuite overlooked the interior garden far below and inner courtyard. The room is typical small size for Paris hotels, clean, beds continue to be comfortable, and staff is quite helpful. Hotel has an elevator and ac useful in late spring and summer but unnecessary in october even tho temps were in the 70s during our stay. Safe is at front desk and there is a small digital tv with bbc and cnn channels. #24 bus stop that takes you past Lux Gardens, near the orangerie and past the louvre to opera is 2 blocks and censier-daubenton metro is 2 blocks in a different direction along Rue Monge. Nearby by Cave du Bourgogne is a reliable restaurant -eat their Salad Complet. Can't ask for much more in a well located 2* hotel, very reasonably priced and good value for Paris.

We could hardly have made a better choice than Hotel de l’Esperance – location, cost and facilities. It is small, and perfectly situated on a quiet one-way street about two minutes walk from Rue Mouffetard in the Latin Quarter. On each of the 6 floors, there are 4 rooms (double beds) facing the road, and 2 rooms (twin beds) facing the ‘courtyard/garden’. As to be expected, the rooms are small. The double glazing is effective, and city noise is very minimal. We were in a rear facing room, and found the rumble of the lift/elevator quite noticeable from time to time. The beds were firmish and comfortable. The room was spotlessly clean, and everything worked. Included was a small flat screen wall mounted TV, with 50 channels. Only BBC World and CNN International were in English, but F1 GP was live on TFI, and other live sport was on Canal+. The TV volume had been preset not to exceed 33%. We brought an international adaptor for charging batteries, laptop etc. In the ensuite bathroom there was a bath with handheld shower, and a hair dryer wall unit with a shaver socket. Some rooms do have walk-in showers. There was central air conditioning with temp and fan control, and for winter the room had a central heating radiator. There was no safe in the room. In the lobby, there was an ice machine, drinks vending machine and shoe shine machine. Next to reception, for guest use there is one PC with a European keyboard and a printer connection. There is free high speed Wi-Fi in the rooms. The reception staff were friendly and efficient. Amovel, in particular, was very helpful and knowledgeable. Via the internet, we pre-arranged airport transfers using the ‘Parishuttle’ shared option at E20 per person – it was an excellent service. Local restaurants that we enjoyed included Le Mouffetard (breakfast E5-E10), La Crete (lunch E8) and Pasta e Fagioli (dinner from E10). From the hotel it is an easy walk to the Luxembourg Gardens and also to Jardin des Plantes. Censier-Daubenton Metro on Rue Monge is also a short walk away, as is Les Gobelins Metro. For 5 days of sightseeing, the Visit Paris zone 1-3 pass was a good deal at E31. The day after the pass expired, we walked to the Seine and bought the 1 day Batobus pass for E15. For the RER train to Versailles (zone 5) the roundtrip ticket was E7. We loved Paris - it was a memorable holiday , and we would highly recommend this hotel.

Comfortable place with reasonable rates. Despite other reviews, we found front desk people polite and friendly. No chit chat, just take your key and relax. Hotel is in great location near Mouffetard and metro. Of course space is limited, but shower was hot and bed was comfortable. Forget the breakfast -- just hop over to Starbucks then grab a pastry from one of the many patisseries. This is a great place to get acquainted with Paris.

This was our second stay at Hôtel de l'Esperance. It is very close to the Metro, a short walk from the train from CDG and on a very quiet side street. It's extremely clean and the staff are friendly and professional. The rooms are small - it's Paris, after all, but the price is very reasonable. The location is fantastic - around the corner from rue Mouffetard and a short walk from the Sienne and from both Luxembourg Gardens and the Jardin des Plants. There are some great restaurants in the neighbourhood. It won't be our last visit!

We just spent three nights in l 'Esperance and found everything to be in order. The staff were helpful and spoke English well. There is a good area for reasonably priced meals just two blocks north (rue Mouffetard.). We really enjoyed the handy ice machine in the lobby and this having been a hot time, the air conditioning was appreciated.

Room Tip: We had to pay ten euro extra for a room with a tub. Since I prefer a shower, I would ask for an 85...
