“Brilliant trip to Paris in a briliant hotel”
Reviewed October 13, 2008

Stayed at the New Orient for 2 days early October after seeing the hotel advertised in my City Paris tourist book, and I was not disappointed. I was looking for something fairly cheap but with a traditional french feel and that is what we got.

The hotel is located 5 mins walk from Villiers metro stop and is on a ittle street that looks out on to small apartments and shops.

The staff were lovely, they spoke excellent english and unlike some places in Paris didnt mind using it! They were incredibly helpful, friendly and welcoming. The room was small by english hotel standards, but adequate for what we needed, and very clean and modern with laminate flooring and a small balcony with little flower boxes. The bathroom was brandnew and lovely and clean.

All in all we had a lovely stay in Paris and I would definately recommend this hotel for anyone wanting an affordable, quaint, comfortable hotel to use as a base to explore Paris.

For the global traveller, Parisian (for that matter, European) hotels can be awkward, small and bare - as if adding insult to injury, accompanied by ridiculous tariffs for what you get.

Hotel New Orient is primarily value for money, suited to easy going tourists who want a clean room with clean facilities and a safe neighborhood to stay in. Positioned 300 m from Villiers Metro, ATMs, pubs and casual local restaurants, it offers the experience of life as a local. Walking through nearby daily market streets like Rue de Levis, purchasing baguettes and pastries and browsing bric-a-brac added a dimension often lost to tourists in 5-star hotels and those only strolling the Champs Elysees. We found breakfast at the store across the road and from the nearby markets selling fresh food every morning.

Admittedly the mid-staircase 3-man (or one-man + 2 bags) elevator is unusual, but understandable as a retrofit to an old building; the beds are comfortable and our bathroom fixtures brand-new. The air-conditioning does appears set for the whole building which can be irritating, but easy access to 2 balconies in our room helped with breeze. It can be noisy with light traffic easily heard from 6 am. Daily servicing meant clean, tidy rooms to come home to. There is also free wi-fi internet access and public computer in the lobby.

Their English speaking staff are helpful and are happy to recommend and book restaurants for you, as well as direct you as required. We found no problems with the Metro service, where a Metro station is within 500m of almost all the famous sites and museums.

Compared with our other stay in a 4-star hotel, we got the same small-sized room, bed and small bathroom and distance to the Metro, as this 2-star. Sure their furniture was nicer and location more prestigious, but we paid 3 times as much. In Euro, that's a lot. There are definitely more beautiful places to stay than the New Orient, but be prepared to pay.

Thanks to other reviews on Trip Advisor, I made the correct decision to stay in this hotel for 3 nights last week. It was a fantastic hotel. The room is typical Paris-size but I did found it comfortable. It was extremely clean and tidy. The environment was quiet and there was a supermarket right opposite to the hotel. It just took a short walk to go to Metro and train stations as well as the shopping area. All the staff I met there were very helpful and friendly. I h ave stayed in other 2 or 3 star hotels in Paris before. This one is definitely worth the money spent. Would certainly come back next time!

This hotel was highly praised in a New York Times article as a great bargain and that it is. It is a two star hotel. Our room was small but clean and comfortable. BAth clean and modern. The staff was very friendly. The breakfast was good too. The neighborhood is a few metro stops away from the main tourist areas but it is a very nice residential neighborhood. Small family run restaurants where we were the only tourists. The morning markets up the block were a real treat. We walked amongst Parisians purchasing the ingedients for their weekend meals. We felt like we were expereinceing another slice of Paris. It was kind of like being in Brooklyn when visiting New York. Great quallity of life expereince slightly off the main tourist area - which was fine for us. Only draw back is that is takes a few changes on the Metro to get back to the main tourist areas but this is no big deal unless you are high maintenance travelers. I highly recommend this hotel for folks looking for a good deal while visitng a wonderful city. We spent so little time in the room anyway.

Very nice people running the hotel, we loved the clean bathroom and the lack of traffic in the street. Very good service helping us getting a taxi (the train-drivers were at strike). Short walk to Montmartre, and to the grand shopping magazines at blv. Hausmann. Nice breakfast included cereals and fresh fruit.

When we closed the double-paned windows of our fifth floor room facing the street, no outside noise of any kind penetrated our serene environment. One small drawback of this hotel – the elevator only stops mid-way between floors. However, the person at reception was happy to lug our bags up to it and we stopped above our floor to lug them down.

  • Liked — Charm and smoke-free environment
  • Disliked — Mid-floor location of elevator and price of breakfast.

This is a very charming, quaint, very French hotel in a decent, convenient location. It's got restaurants closeby and is good for exploring Montmartre, which is a great area. But, otherwise, you pretty much need a subway or two to get anywhere. The Saint-Lazare station is good and closeby but you have to go deep underground, walk quite a lot inside the station and change at least once to get places. It is not half as conveinient as staying in the Latin Quarter, which is close to the museums, Notre Dame, the main gardens etc.
As for the rooms, they were small (what do you expect in Paris) but had a good-sized armoire. The rooms were very charming as well. But, here's the downside. I was sleeping in my room and I woke up early in the morning to realize I couldn't turn the heat on because the hotel had not turned the heat on, claiming it was summer (it was September and in the 50's at night). In the morning, we woke up and begged the owner to turn the heat on, which he did after protesting that it was so warm outside. Who the hell are they to decide what's a comfortable temperature for me or for anyone else? They did not leave the heat on consistently and we had to ask for it repeatedly. Only the owner could turn the heat on and the guys at the front desk at night (typically when it got cold) had little clue about what we were asking for. Despite all the lovely charm of this quaint hotel, I did not have a good experience there.
