From the moment I entered Le Citizen, I sensed I had chosen a truly ‘special’ place. I was greeted by a charming young lady called Laure, who – in addition to cheerfully tolerating my dreadful schoolboy French – made me feel like a guest in her home.

The hotel is in a charming location by the side of the Canal St Martin - more reminiscent of Amsterdam than Paris - and is a 15 minute walk from Gare du Nord (or a 5 minute stroll to the nearest station and then 2 stops on the metro). The local area is full of inviting cafes and restaurants.

There are 12 rooms on 6 floors, serviced by a single elevator. My single room on the 5th floor was small but ingeniously well designed. Free wi-fi, free mini-bar and free local & overseas (landlines) calls are provided as standard, along with an iPad which is packed full of useful information.

I imagine that outside noise may be an issue on the lower floors … although the hotel thoughtfully provides ear plugs.

Not surprisingly, breakfast is a delight. The well-stocked buffet is accompanied by fresh juice, freshly brewed coffee and warm croissants.

As I headed towards Gare du Nord for the Eurostar to London I felt sad to be leaving, and assured Laure that I will return one day … with an improved vocabulary.

Wonderful and warm hotel in a great, off-beat area. Though the rooms are small (expected) they were finished to a high standard and very comfortable, fantastic staff and very welcoming. Good breakfasts and a really nice way to the start the day in the breakfast room watching the canal side bustle. Would highly recommend it and looking forward to returning. The area around the hotel is well worth checking out too, La Patache (with its fluffy grey bar-cat), Marcel (French-Indian restaurant) and other bars to while away the hours. It really felt like we were kind of living there for a while.

We were only in Paris for three days and loved our time we spent realizing in the room, you can't say that for a lot of European hotels. The staff was VERY friendly, responsive ,informative and attentive. We would definitely stay in this hotel again when visiting Paris! Also, love that's a green hotel!

Room Tip: My husband and I stayed in the Zen suite with our 6 year old and there was plenty of room.

For a large city hotel I was really impressed with Citizen's friendliness, cleanliness, and even room size. The hotel is very modern (you get an iPad with your room) and the space is decorated interestingly. The staff is incredibly helpful and goes above normal customer service to help out.

The location is a fun area of town. We only stayed one night and enjoyed the area, but it is not for the traveler who just wants to be where the sites + tourist destinations are.

For the price I found this to be a perfect big city hotel. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Paris.

Negatives: 1. Size of the room (small even by european standards - but please note we stayed in the smallest room), 2. No drip coffee (minor negative), 3. Weekend street noise from people gathering in the evening at the canal for picnics.
Positives: 1. Super responsive service (caring, helpful, prompt, professional), 2. AC great, 3. Best shower in the world, 4. Excellent bed, 5. Cool location away from tourists and among locals, 6. Close to Gare de L'est and subway stop Republique.
In summation, positives far outway negatives and this hotel is a worthwhile stay.

Room Tip: If you choose a smaller room to save money, pack very lightly as there is very little closet space.
