On the left bank, this visit to Paris was the first time we stayed and explored this area. Very convenient location. Easy walk to almost every attraction with, for example, The Louvre being about 10 -15 minutes. Many interesting small streets to explore and of course Rue Saint Germain with its high end shops and restaurants.

St Germain des Pres is close (pres in French) to the Latin Quarter, the Seine, even the Eiffel Tower (not really, but you can walk there: look at a map, my GPS led me all over the left bank before I arrived at St Germain). I usually go to the Lipp Brasserie, even though in the summer it is full of tourists searching for the past, but during the rest of the year, it is filled with older locals reliving the past (eat the food and drink elsewhere, way too expensive). Across the street is Cafe de Flore, which, again, is expensive, but go there for coffee on a sunny Sunday afternoon, if you can get a table. Walk around the neighborhood and soak up the feeling of a very old Paris, listen to the shouts from the Revolution, from the Commune, or from the Gilets Jaunes across the river.
