A downhill stroll, taking in the whole length of the rue Mouffetard in February sunshine this morning was a special experience, a joy. I love the fact that its continuations in both directions are streets whose names recall two brilliant minds from a time of order, the early 17th century: the rue Descartes to the north of the Place Contrescarpe, the rue Pascal to the south. Because rue Mouffetard is anything but. There is nothing clear and flat and systematic and linear about the rue Mouffetard. It is all about the unpredictable way it winds as it heads downhill. Georges Duhamel’s description of it with all those marine metaphors is wonderful. Plus there are countless interesting-looking shops and restaurants as you let gravity have its way and carry you downhill. And you end up at the fruit market with a beautiful display of unbelievably delicious-looking fresh produce.

This is an area of Paris the tourist soften miss. Wonderful market. We had an outside Edith Piaf impromptu concert People were singing and dancing with the musicians. It was lovely and worth the detour! Great restaurants around.

This is one of the oldest streets of Paris. Here you can buy some local products like fresh vegetables, fruit and cheese.

This charming winding street on the left bank in Paris has buildings dating back to the 1789 revolution. Great restaurants inter spaced between markets.
