“You should see it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2007

The area has a different feel from central Paris. I think when visiting a city, it is important to see and experience the different areas. I felt safe there, but I make it a habit not to carry a purse when site seeing. We were fortunate not encounter the scary men trying to sell us or intimidate us on our visit to Sacre-Coeur. I think it is important to remember they are not there to hurt you, but to intimidate, so don't let them!

“beware of pickpockets”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2007

this is a beautiful church to go and visit. a must see if you are in france. it is especially beautiful at sunset. one thing the tourist books do not tell you is the pickpockets at work there. i was extra careful but still managed to get my purse stolen out of my handbag. there is apparantley an army of women and children at work in the vicinity. other than the pickpockets it was a beautiful place to visit. surounded by little streets full of reasonably priced touristy nick nack and brilliant resteraunts. you also get the best view of paris from up there. be prepared for a climb though. theres a lot od steps. there is a cable car that runs up priced at 3 euros when i went.

“Sad. This place really needs a police presense.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2007

Luckily we had read the other postings from people who encountered problems from, as one reviewer put it, the "rasta dudes" on the steps.

I sat on the steps and watched them harass countless people who ended up coughing up money through their intimidation techniques. I found the best strategy would be just to pretend you don't speak whatever they're trying to say to you, in whatever language. One lady had about a 4-5 year old daughter that they continually tried to tie one of the bracelets. She looked pretty local, holding her daughter with one hand and her bag of groceries in the other. Repeatedly she had to yell at the guy and hit at his hand to prevent him from following through.

I guess if you get cornered you have to make a scene so they'll back off.

Disappointing that this does seem to sour something like this for everyone. They don't seem to hang out at the top as much, so if you walk up the back side you might be able to avoid a lot of it.

“Bracelet Weavers”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2007

Don't go~ gangs of intimadating men grab peoples wrists, tie a piece of string round and charge a ridiculous ammount for the privilege. Once surrounded by 6/7 men demanding euros most people hand it over. The best thing to do is keep your hands in your pockets as i did. These men should be ashamed of themselves. They will do it to children and the elderly. Why hasn't something been done about this? It's absolutely disgusting.

“Like a zoo”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2007

Sacre Coeur was like a zoo last week. We were really unimpressed with
the amount of people traipsing round the church - why? There are so many better ones to go and visit in the city. And the area was full of hawkers wanting to paint your picture or sell you stuff. It just wasn't fun at all.

The only good thing about going there is the view from the very top, which is well worth the short wait and the long climb up the spiral stairs to do.
