A truly spiritual place despite the crowds, fourth visit and it never fails to touch me. The view across Paris is also wonderful. Montmartre is fun with nice cafés and bad artists, though one guy was doing a really great likeness, the rest seemed sure to disappoint.

Hotelier forgot to mention the 350 or so steps up (or the cable left!). Felt like Stallone in rocky by the time we walked to the top - but good exercise up and down.

Having visited the Sacre Coeur before, I was prepared for the number of steps. There are well over 100, and relatively steep.

The view from the top is brilliant and worth the climb. The church itself is beautiful, and the strict silence rule inside is a good thing in my opinion.

Please please please watch out for pickpockets. My partner and I were approached several times by men trying to attach string to your wrist, and then demand money/pickpocket you. I ended up arguing with one in French, as he would not back off. A poor woman was swarmed by three or four of these men at once.

It is difficult to enjoy the walk to the top with these men harassing you.

The metro stop is at the bottom of the hill, and an announcement on the train warns you of pickpockets before you disembark.

Visited the Sacred Heart Basilica of Montmartre on 22/11/14. It is a very nice building which stands out in the skyline of Paris, but the inside is very sober.

We went towards the end of the day, it's staggering in the light and even more impressive in the dark. Looking over Paris as it transitions into night is very romantic.
